I loved pretty much every aspect of this game. Whether it was the satisfying souls-like combat, the treasure trove of puzzles and secrets, the evocative art style and music, or the gradual piecing-together of the story, the design and quality always remained top-notch and kept me firmly hooked. Aside from the occasional difficulty spike or confusing roadblock, my only issue with the game is that it wasn't longer. I became so invested in the game that by the time the ending came about, I was moved to tears. Lots of love and thanks to the devs for making such a wonderful game! <3

It's a fun game with lots to do and explore. Though it may be quite an old and outdated game, it still makes for a great experience both with and without the dlcs.

CS:GO Review
An old but great game that stands the test of time. Now that it is free, I would recommend giving the game a try. Looking past the trolls and hackers, the game is fun to play and brings you closer to your friends through the teamwork required. The graphics don’t beat around the bush and if you have a good PC, the game is very playable. Overall a great game to play! 9/10

Early Access Review
Do you play minecraft and want to die?

Do you have too much money and want to buy your way through games?

Are you a 7 year old with access to you parents' credit cards?

If you fit all these criteria, please proceed to leave steam, go back to call of duty, and play this game...

=================================================================

This game is essentially a copy of minecraft but this time it's more pay to win and it has guns. It has great features such as, clunky controls, potato graphics, pay to win, and a less balanced games and weapons than CS:GO. It took me less than ten minutes to find that some roblox games are better than this game. Seriously though, if you are a sane person, I reccommend staying as far away as possible from this game.

-11/10 would suicide again.

The TL;DR is that War Thunder is frustrating, pay-to-progress, and not enjoyable for long periods of time, but if you're interested below is my honest review of the game after 3000 steam hours of play (and probably about 1500 hidden hours of play). I try to be as objective as possible despite this game negatively affecting my life in a very significant way. Unfortunately, I have been on both ends of verbal abuse and gameplay abuse and I really wish that my review might help stop some of the abuse and have a positive effect on someone's life.

First of all, I have to give credit where credit is due: Many aspects of War Thunder are well-made, of high quality, and a lot of thought and development has clearly gone into them. If you are somehow unfamiliar with combat simulation games, then War Thunder is quite a robust and moderately detailed pick from a simulation quality standpoint. The game has great graphics, generally good netcode*, generally good physics*, and complexity to one's taste. However, despite these good qualities, the game and community present glaring issues to new and old players.
*there are some exceptions and inconsistencies eg. volumetric, shell damage & balance, invisible terrain features, rubber banding at long distances, unrealistic vehicle traction, airfield AAA, MEC & unbalanced simulator mechanics.

As a new player, the problems begin the moment you open the tech tree and scroll to the bottom. In order to get here you will be required to cough up lot of time (1000s of hours minimum), money (at least £60 to retain your sanity), and brainpower (required if you haven't already expended your sanity) if you want to unlock anything interesting like top tier fast jets, MBTs, helicopters, or battleships (for only one of these vehicle types in a single nation). Until then, you have very little choice in what kinds of vehicles to play unless you put in a significant amount of time (and money) into the game. Yes, the game contains over 2000 vehicles but at the beginning you can only play about 50 uninteresting starter vehicles (with a selection of around 200-300 premium paid vehicles). And when I say "significant amount of time", I mean that it can take somewhere in the high hundreds to a thousand hours to get to the top tier of a single nation's vehicle tree if you pay for nothing (this number is roughly halved with paid premium account time or a premium paid vehicle, quartered if both). Overall, the expectations put on new players are unrealistically high if you are a free to play player and still very high for paid players. We will see that this has vast consequences on the community.

Along the way to the bottom of a tech tree, you will play essentially a repetitive and small pool of maps and gamemodes (the gamemodes eg. Domination (ground), Battle (ground), Operation (air) do have slight differences but these are negligible and the fundamental gameplay of shoot to kill enemy players is constant). You play against players who will test your knowledge of the game to an extreme level before you can succeed. By this I mean they will camp spots or airfields, take full advantage of meta vehicles and exploits in such a way as to render your experience to be as frustrating as possible. In this environment, the gameplay quickly becomes stale as you also must get used to the quirks and bugs that still persist in the game's physics engine. Adding to the frustration is the existence and use of unbalanced vehicles which become virtually invincible in the hands of skilled players. A new player will struggle to consistently get more than 2000 RP per match and the experience will be tedious and frustrating until they learn the mechanics of the game (can take thousands of games) as well as the convoluted and opaque mechanics of the tech tree. By the time top tier is reached, players no longer care much for the originally appealing aspects of the game such as simulation quality, cool vehicles, and graphics, but rather are focussed on exacting revenge on enemy and friendly players alike to make up for the sunken time, monetary, and psychological cost of playing the game to such an extent.

Under these harsh conditions, players are driven to display their worst tendencies. These include abusive in-game behaviour (such as teamkilling, verbal abuse, racism & other hate speech, revenge killing, and blocking), exploiting bugs, broken spots, and broken meta, and having arguments over realism of certain game elements which have led to high profile leaks of classified documents. The playerbases of other games do not have such serious behavioral issues and do not display them with such high frequency and severity as in War Thunder. My informed view is that this broadly toxic community arises as a direct consequence of the aforementioned issues of unrealistically high expectations of new players and unforgiving mechanics. There is also an element of incubation for these behaviours, in that toxic behaviour breeds further toxic behaviour since players follow the example of those around them. The deceitful and dishonest communication between the developers and the community does little to help improve the situation.

Overall, I cannot recommend War Thunder because the real experience of playing the game is far from what is advertised and is indeed harmful the lives, minds, and wallets of new and old players alike. I suggest to new players that you stay away from this game for the foreseeable future and instead play something more enjoyable and worthwhile. The only thing this game will bring you is frustration and then regret. I suggest to old players that you stop playing as soon as possible and move on with your lives. The frustration at the gameplay and players is symmetric and conserved regardless of game mode, nation, or tier.

I bid the game, community, and devs farewell in the hopes that it may one day get better. I wish only good luck, good health, and a long happy life to those who read this. Nespresso out! ;p
