Easily one of the best games ever created. The 'In Bruges' of video games. The storytelling, aesthetic, gameplay and the way everything fits together is unmatched. I have a few relatively minor quibbles with how some puzzles are designed, but this game is as close to perfect as games get.
Play it.

Chrono Trigger is easily one of the best games ever made and probably *the* best JRPG ever made. As some commentators have pointed out, Chrono Trigger's stand-out characteristic is easily its pacing: the game is far shorter than most JRPGs, but it manages to pack in just as much interesting gameplay and just as many impactful story moments, great revelations and side quests as much longer games. And all this is highly polished, too. AND it's aged incredibly well - better than JRPGs that came out decades later.

There simply isn't anything else like it. Play this game.

Really good gunplay, bosses with lots of fun skill-based mechanics, plenty of fun synergies to mess around with. The fact that the rogue-like elements don't vary too much between runs is a bit unfortunate, but the core gameplay is just so damn good that it doesn't matter.

An excellent JRPG with good press turn battle-based combat, an interesting class system, great characters and a surprisingly compelling story. This is a love letter to JRPGs - particularly to Atlus's games - and I think anybody who likes the Persona series or JRPGs in general ought to play it.

I do have a few minor criticisms, though, which I think will make the game less well remembered over time.

Firstly, the class system falls apart as the game goes on. Classes are split into archetype lineages, which are filled with many different classes that fulfil the same general functions. One problem with this is that getting a character up to snuff with a new lineage near the endgame simply requires too much grinding. Another problem is that each character actually has an 'ultimate' class that only they have access to - this, along with the glut of party members, defeats the purpose of having a class system in the first place. The point is that you can give your party members whatever classes you want.

Secondly, the way the game manages random encounters is problematic. Being able to end easy random encounters without entering combat is fun, but it allows you to trivialise the game's resource management too easily in some cases. Also, the contrast between successfully ambushing a group of enemies (by stunning them outside of combat) and getting ambushed by a group of enemies (by getting hit) is too great - at least on hard mode. Ambush a group of enemies and the stuns will usually guarantee that you win, sometimes without even taking any damage. Get ambushed by a group of enemies and you are, in some cases, virtually guaranteed to die.

Thirdly, there just isn't enough music!

All that being said, I still highly recommend this game - it's a well-written love letter.

Hades II is a great sequel. It takes everything that was great about the first game (which was already excellent) and doubles down, adding more content, more variety and more refined mechanics throughout. The gods' boons are a little bit more difficult to get used to at first, but once you get into the groove of working with them, it becomes much easier to appreciate how much Supergiant Games has refined the first Hades.

There's a fair amount of jank, but this is an extremely ambitious, well-presented CRPG with a lot of heart. It absolutely lives up to the hype.

It's flawed, but it's unique, it's fun and it lets you import custom character sprites.

Rogue-likes and rogue-lites have become staples of the indie scene in recent years, but personally, I feel a lot of these games have lacked balance. Many games have interesting RPG elements and synergies but lackluster action (see Enter The Gungeon, the Risk of Rain series), many games have interesting action elements but a lack of variety or RPG elements (see Nuclear Throne), and furthermore, many rogue-lites focus on their rogue-lite nature to the extent that individual runs don't feel particularly meaningful (see Rogue Legacy, arguably Dead Cells).

Hades, however, strikes a perfect balance- drawing on the best of Supergiant Games's catalog. This is a game with action far more fast-paced and cathartic than Bastion, with the intriguing skill and passive synergies of Transistor and of course, with the gorgeous music and art this studio's known for. Every run is a highly satisfying burst of adrenaline which always feels fair and fun- and even in early access, the combinations of Boons you can get are very interesting.

I have no doubt that Hades is only going to become a better and better game- and whether you're a fan of rogue-likes or someone who's felt like the genre's been missing something recently, you're sure to find a lot of enjoyment in Hades' endlessly fun balance of number crunching and catharsis.

While it is flawed in several regards (I'm looking at you, questionable input buffering), Sekiro can generally be said to be a triumphant reinvigoration of From Software's output.

Taking from Tenchu and the Souls(borne) series, Sekiro will feel very familiar to veterans of the series but it will also crucially feel very unfamiliar. Years of spamming the circle button are thrown out the window the moment you get into the game and find that your dodges aren't particularly useful. Furthermore, while the reactive play of yore can work, the moment you fight a boss you'll find that old strategies die hard. Some enemies ask for reactive play, some for constant aggression, and some for a mix of the two. Nonetheless, you actually have to think about how you're going to take bosses on now: no longer is the roll a catch-all defence if timed right: you need to manage your posture bar while blocking, time deflects precisely and use the appropriate evasion for a range of attacks which require you to pay close attention to the boss.

Combine these mechanics with From Software's typical stunning array of bosses, and Sekiro is a game invigorating and satisfying for veterans as their first From Software game would have been. Of course, Sekiro isn't perfect. There are too many sculptor's idols, a few questionable hitboxes, the stealth system is somewhat erratic and again, the input buffering doesn't work properly. But overall, Sekiro is worth your time. It's an endlessly gratifying learning experience which rewards your improvement far more than any of the other From Soft games have.
