After 800h clocked, I thought it’s time I shared my thoughts. This is easily my favourite Open World game of all time. Some of my dearest online friendships have been made inside this picturesque post-Soviet apocalyptic Czech Republic setting. Bohemia Interactive / BI really know how to develop deeply layered immersive games, with a solid military simulation foundation.

Be aware, this game throws you in at the deep end. You awake finding yourself dying from thirst, your first step is to find a water source. Ensure the water is clean or you will be walking away with Cholera, my dude. It’s a harsh game. Which attracts some and retracts others. Death is permanent – you lose everything. That is unless your teammate can carry your gear or you have a base set up. You are constantly battling with threats, whether it be Zombies, Hunger, Thirst, Disease or other survivors.

The 225 km2 map has been updated and tweaked over the past 10 years, spanning across 3 AAA titles. It’s beauty and design still blows me away after all this time. All in all, DayZ is a game you can pick-up with your friends and you may spend a whole evening just getting to where your friends are on the map. The game is a journey, do as you wish. Team up or go alone. Guns blazing or lie and wait. Live off the land or survive from left behind food. Friendly or foe. Kill or be killed.

In conclusion, if you like survival games where you can get lost in the sauce, then this game is for you. The development has been slow of late, but can appreciate they are testing out their new engine, which will be used for ARMA 4. Grab the game on sale if you are unsure on whether you’ll like it, jump in a popular server and go talk to some people and begin your journey.
