TL:DR - survival / city management mashup in a viking setting with "so-so" combat and an enjoyable slow grind.

With all the different types of survival and city management games available I think the best way I can describe this game is imagine Medieval Dynasty (MD) in a viking setting with better combat but closer to valheim graphics. I prefer this over MD since it comes across as more of a survival and less of a city management....at first! After you get your bearings you'll be able to add more villagers. I personally am enjoying getting to the point where I feel I want to restart to do better and trying to do a run without dying. With that being said if you die you can consume the soul of one of your villages. You 'craft' villagers by adding resources to a structure you build.

The loop is pretty satisfying and I think I'll get a lot of value out of this game. This would likely be more enjoyable with a friend but thats not an option for me atm ;-;.

Great game that I look forward to sinking a lot more time into.

Prepare to die..... with friends!

If you like boss rush games this is for you.
If you like souls games and want something with a smaller time investment that just jumps right in the action, this is for you.
If you like checking out indie games, this is for you.

Offering co-op is S tier, nothing like relentlessly dying with your best friends...or really anyone.

I can tell you that the team behind this quite literally put everything they had into this game.

I don’t think I can say anything that hasn’t been said but FWIW…

I haven’t been all that active in a street fighter game since SNES/arcade game. This has me playing online almost every day. Que is very quick!

While I use classic controls I have to give a huge applause to the addition of modern controls. It makes the game more accessible. I’m trying to climb up the ladder with blanka and am currently gold 2. I’ve seen plenty of modern players.

I really wish Vega would come to the game but I doubt I’ll ever see him again 😫

Steam says I've only played this game for 27 hours but it feels like a lot longer... that may be because I tend to play it a lot or because I feel like i've made a lot of progress for a rougelike.

This game is a literal masterpiece. I wouldnt' say that about many games but having not been too impressed by ziggurat 1 I almost didn't try ziggurat 2. That would've been a horrible thing to do. The game is extremely fast paced and is literally a treat for any roguelike fan. If they release any DLC i'd blindly buy it. Literally wouldn't change anything about this game.

You do feel like you have to work to unlock stuff. The game promotes randomness by giving you a boost in coins (10% per choice) by using their random suggested hero, starting wand, weapon , amulet, etc.

I have my favorite so I always go for that combo but I'm sure others have their own. The more you use gear the more XP in that gear you have...BUT you need those precious coins to level that gear up :).

I could go on and on but this game is SO SO SO good.

I've now played this game for over 200 hours and I still play this game almost daily. At the very minimum I'd say I play three times a week. The graphics quickly grew on me. At first sight I wasn't crazy about them but now they look great and fit nicely.

I don't know know if there will be a card game quite this good for a very long time. This game is beautiful and I think it will be looked back on as a staple in the genre.

I'd almost say it does for card games what Divinity Original Sin did for CRPG's...and that's a huge compliment. If for some reason you're reading this and haven't bought / tried this game you owe it to yourself. Just buy it and play less than two hours. If for some reason you don't like it then you can get a refund.

It is seriously a masterpiece . I'll buy any and all DLC as well as follow the developer for any future games.

__OLD REVIEW BELOW__

I've only played this six hours and I can say it is amazing. I enjoyed Slay The Spire but this feels way more streamlined. I felt like in StS there were just some garbage battles I didn't care for. This game feels like fewer more ..."epic" battles.

I don't know if i'll ever be "done" w/this game but I assume it'll get me well over 40 hours if not over 80. I had 88 hours in StS and I didn't even beat the real last boss.

I will say the graphics initially made me hesitant to buy this game...just wasn't for me. That being said no review on youtube really captured what this game was for me. You can always return it if you don't like it within two hours......but I don't see many people not liking it. If you know you enjoy these type of card games this one is a must.

I'm not sure if I played this game for 5 hours in one day ...but at most it was two days. Thats how good this game is. I can't even remember the days :D. If you like deck builders this is for you. Its impossible to not compare it to Slay the Spire. There are some shared cards amongst each class but they also have their own.

This could just be the "newness" but I'm really enjoying this game and not in a rush to go try 4th char in StS. This game is a complete steal right now at the sale price of 7.50.

I WOULD like to hear better sound effects added to the game. Even added mousoever effects could go a long way. I hope they keep adding more characters and cards.

I got the first Surge in Humble Bundle and didn't know much about it. I ended up sinking 59 hours into that game and enjoyed it thoroughly. it didn't ever feel like a slog and I appreciated the crafting system...combat system felt really tight and well put together.

I mention all of this because thus far Surge 2 just gives me more of that feeling. If you liked the first one I'd be shocked if you didn't enjoy this one. If you hated the first then the same goes...not likely your cup of tea.

If you adored Dark Souls I think you'd enjoy this too. I think I like the mechanics of this game better. The power core system makes sense and hunting down enemies to be able to craft armor sets is quite nice.

I wish everyone had the backstory or just the idea of how much effort the developer put into this game. This is a VERY small indie team of guys that have been putting in their own time and money to see this project to completion.

No the game isn't AAA, but it is challenging and worth way more than the $1 price tag. I'll stop (b)rambling (so much pun) on and talk about the game now.

The game is challenging enough on story mode, I can't even try to do it on tempest. I do LOVE the fact that you are rewarded if you beat bosses on the harder difficulty,. It's not just a "hey good job" or an achievement, you get a different blessing (power in game).

You basically are trying to beat bosses w/o getting hit. You can dash / roll and power up your attack. You want to get your attack in the yellow at the end to get a critical hit. Spamming attacks won't get you anywhere aside from restarting the fight.

I don't know anyone outside the developer / animator but I absolutely have to point out that the music is really well done and atmospheric. This isn't meant to be a long 40 hour game. If have good reflexes you could likely beat it an hour, I am not in that boat though.
