This was my first S.T.A.L.K.E.R game which I've played back in 2012.
I'm sad to say that this is an inferior version of the product when compared to the original that came out 16 years ago.
Lets start with some of the good changes that were made:
- The engine is far more stable, no stutters are present and the draw distance has been increased to a reasonable level, without sacrificing the feeling of scale.
- Achievements were added and are not that difficult to obtain
- Most of the bugs have been fixed and the game did not crash at all
- The water textures look quite nice, as well as the skyboxes.
Sadly, the list of changes that negatively impact the experience is longer:

- USSR imagery and references to Russia have been removed, along with the voice acting that was a selling point for me back in the day. There was no better feeling than stumbling across some stalkers next to a campfire, cracking jokes in a foreign language and just vibing to the atmosphere. That is sadly gone, and we currently have the English vocalization that sounds like a parody. I understand that the developers have wounds that are yet to be healed, they lost loved ones due to politics and matters that they have very little control over, and as such, revisionism can be seen as a coping mechanism.

-The game is blurrier than the original, and visual fidelity has been compromised. Objects in the distance have jagged edges and it feels like Degtyarev has skipped his check up at the ophthalmologist . You are forced to use FSR, as no other options are present, otherwise the image is going to be even worse. Not to mention that the minimum specs have been raised as well. I remember running the original with a 512mb card and a 2.3 GHZ processor at around 40 fps. This newer version requires an NVIDIA GeForce GTX960 4GB or AMD Radeon RX 560 4GB to run at LOW SETTINGS.
Let me remind you that these cards can max out The Witcher 3, which is a far more complex game. I'm guessing that these requirements pertrain for the FSR and other frame generation/upscaling tech.

- the EULA for modding and playing the games is atrocious. I love making videos where I use gameplay from S.T.A.L.K.E.R as a background while talking about various topics, and now I'm not able to do so since the EULA forbids it. Guess I'll have to capture footage from Anomaly then.

My advice is to stick to the original, add some QOL mods and you will have an infinitely better experience.

S.T.A.L.K.E.R 2 impresses with its seamless open world and atmospheric environments, but it lacks the dynamic A-Life system that made the original games feel alive. NPC and mutant encounters are limited to a small radius around the player, making the world feel less reactive. Some speculate this is due to console limitations, but rushed development following the team's relocation likely played a role. Despite claims of advanced AI behavior, in reality, mutants and NPCs always know the player’s location, and faction dynamics are largely scripted rather than organic.

Graphics are stunning at times, with photorealistic environments reminiscent of Death Stranding. However, poor UE5 optimization, excessive reliance on Lumen and Nanite, and visual issues like shimmering vegetation and intrusive HDR lighting hinder immersion. Buildings feel too clean compared to the grimy, decayed look of past entries, making some locations feel artificial.

Performance is inconsistent. While it runs decently on an RX 6700 XT at medium settings, memory leaks cause severe FPS drops in populated areas, and frequent crashes due to ACCESS VIOLATION errors plague the experience. Enabling FSR helps performance but introduces input lag.

Sound design is a standout, with immersive environmental audio and realistic weapon acoustics. However, key atmospheric elements like distant mutant howls are missing.

Gameplay sticks to the classic loop but lacks the organic unpredictability of its predecessors. Encounters feel scripted, with enemies spawning nearby rather than existing naturally in the world. In contrast to Call of Pripyat, which encouraged scouting and dynamic encounters, S.T.A.L.K.E.R 2 reduces exploration to following quest markers and reacting to forced enemy spawns.

Overall, S.T.A.L.K.E.R 2 has strong foundations but falls short of the emergent gameplay that defined the series. Future updates may improve things, but as it stands, the world feels more like a theme park than a living, breathing Zone.

A chill, cozy game that still holds up today.

If you've played it before, my advice would be to download the essential patches, fixes and some leveling mods to make the experience smoother.

I remember blasting through this game when i was a little kid, alongside my dad and grandfather at the time.
It got me into the gaming subculture at the time, even though i didn't know much about those topics.
It even made me some great friends along the way, rocking the game on New Years eve many years ago, trying to beat the game as quickly as possible.

For me personally, this isn't just a game.
It's a legacy left to many gamers who were kids, who grew up and now have families and their roles to fulfill in an everchanging society.
But this game stayed the same, which is why it will always hold a special place in hearts of many.

Thank you Grey Matter interactive (now Treyarch) for making this masterpiece and giving us timeless joy.
