This game is best enjoyed over tea. Cheap and well worth it. Got a friend to buy it so we could play games together long distance with skype and tea. So, so worth it.

Hero Siege is a game that wants to be Diablo 2. Sometimes it feels like D2, sometimes it sounds like it, sometimes it plays like it. But it's not D2. There's no real comprehensive story, so if that's what you need in a game, this isn't for you. The voice acting is meh, but that's not what this game is about either. There are also definitely still lots of bugs, so again, if that turns you off, don't buy this.

What's charming about this game is that it doesn't take itself too seriously. You choose a preset class which has a small tech tree which you will fill out before you're done with your first pass through the game. Those classes have range or melee attacks, and then you progressively get skills for your shoulder and trigger buttons. Sure, that's pretty typical. You gather equipment through gameplay, you get skill points to get better... yeah, yeah, yeah. What's FUN about this is the relics. You pick up random ♥♥♥♥ that does random ♥♥♥♥ for you, both passively and actively. You get one active at a time and one passive at a time. And honestly, by the time you're collecting these, you're probably going to be so BEEFY that you're just choosing what's funniest. There's one that turns all your enemies on the screen into green apples with a silly voice saying "Salummmmm" and another where a creepy stick man runs around giggling saying something dumb and following up with "Heeeheeeh, my balls are sweaty". He hits some things and leaves. One playthrough, I played an amazon with spears bigger than my character and threw them so fast you couldn't tell one spear from the next. THAT is what makes this game charming.

Once you beat the first playthrough/difficulty, you play again on the next level up. Rinse, wash, repeat. The levels are waves of enemies and the bosses sometimes have interesting mechanics. But if you're like me and you want to do every dungeon, explore every crypt, and finish every quest, you will be way overleveled and the cool mechanics will start to feel trite. Sure, you could just jump up a difficulty, but there are different main bosses. You don't get all the achievements if you skip levels. So realistically, it's probably run up its fun for me.

Also keep in mind it's HEAVILY bugged. If you play with other people you're in for a ride. Puzzles don't sync up so you have to do them separately... most of the time. Sometimes you can help each other. Sometimes lag will kill one or the whole team. And the hit box for leaving areas is atrocious. Seriously, I lost a ton of loot because one of us was trying to get our ♥♥♥♥ and hit the ladder out of a place. The worst.

But... I'm impressed. This very tiny dev team is still working on this. They're raising money by offering you skins and content to cover server and update costs. And honestly, I think that's cool. Yeah it's more money. But what it's adding isn't necessary. You're essentially saying "Thanks, dev team. Have some money so you can keep doing what you're doing." And I think that transparency is what makes me like them more than any of this. I think some day this game is going to be an absolute gem. For now.. it's a pretty fun game.

Also, keep in mind, this game can be played local co-op (where most of my hours went to before I bought the game myself) but it is WAY WAY WAY better played over the internet. That said, sync problems. Two evils. Pick one.

I'm thoroughly impressed with this game. Just as a heads up, this is from the point of view of someone who plays first person shooters but has never gotten the chance to shoot a gun in real life.

I played this game on a whim because I like educational games and wow, I'm learning a lot. Perhaps these are specific and strict, according to other reviewers, but as someone who doesn't know anything about guns, having a specific way things are put together is helpful for me.
There is a ton of content unlockable simply through playing the game enough. You earn experience points by getting achievements, and from what I can tell, the next level is always achieveable through simply playing all the game modes about once on the previous gun.

As for the masses of DLC, that's for if you want extra content immediately. There are some things that are DLC only, such as exclusive skeletons and cars (yes, they have more than just guns) and anything that you haven't unlocked yourself, but that still leaves a lot of gameplay. Since this is a free game that you can unlock a large amount of valuable content through just playing, I find the DLC reasonable. I'd also be happy to support the game by purchasing some of the DLC once I get through all of the unlockable content.

There are about a hundred guns you can unlock through game play. Four or five modes per gun. About 16 achievements per gun. A quiz that unlocks every hour to test your ability to recognize guns. Shooting ranges where you can play with guns. A spec ops mode where you can team up with players and go screw around with guns.
I'm not sure why people are so upset about DLC on a content-packed free game. I am pleased to say that I will be spreading word of this game.

This game was so worth it!

I got it on a whim looking for a local co-op game and found *the* local co-op game. The first night I got it, I played with one friend. Then two. Then we get all four of us playing. By the end of the night we all needed a cup of tea because we'd been screaming at the screen and each other and having a great time.

The co-op is completely customizable. It's hilarious how much you can screw with the game by dictating starting gear or setting changes. My absolute favorite is to include ghosts so that when you die, you're a ghost trying to get out other players. Also? There's three different multiplayer modes--head hunter, last man standing, and team deathmatch.

The single player is why I avoided the game at first. I'd seen a review saying that the single player was terrible. And actually, it's not bad. It can be single, or you can have your friends help you through the campaign. I couldn't imagine beating it alone because it's hard with just me and a partner, but I'm sure it's doable. There isn't a *ton* of content, but it's enough to have a good time, for sure. We're almost done with normal mode all through the campaign (on the last level of the expansion) but then we'll have to go back through on hardcore.
What really makes the levels interesting is the bosses. They're cleverly difficult and there's a different way to beat each one.

Finally, the expansion is great. It unlocks some cute aesthetic changes and adds another five or so levels of gameplay to the campaign. So whether or not it's enough content to typically warrant a $10 purchase, we wanted it so bad we bought it anyway.

All in all, it's been a great investment! It's set me on a hunt to find all the great local co-op games. This is certainly one of the best I've found.

I dig it after the first hour or so of playing! I gave it a shot in a whim, but it's very cool. I got really into it and it really does everything it can to make you, as the player, look around and explore the game. The game creators are very purposeful when they make these puzzles. There weren't any, "Oh, come ON! That's ridiculous. I could never have gotten that," moments. There aren't any times when you absolutely need hints. You just have to keep with it.

The controls change a bit--it throws brand new puzzles in and give you very brief explanations through things like paintings on the walls. There are times when you really do have to just figure it out, but everything is so deliberate that I really appreciate it.

All in all, after the first couple of sit-down's to play it, I'm really enjoying it and am recommending it to friends.

As was described to me when my friend dragged me into it, this game is "what Diablo 3 should have been". I'm a huge Diablo fan, so I jumped on the chance to check this out and got hooked! The passive skill tree is clever and well executed allowing for complete customization of your own gameplay based on how you like your character to be built.
Also, using gems that get better through use dictating what special skills you have was impressive. Altogether, I think they have a lot of great ideas and a lot of good gameplay.
