It’s funny that I learned about this game by pure accident. One day I was just casually listening to music on YouTube and noticed “Stygia feat. Alissa White-Gluz” in the recommendations. Because she is my favorite singer, I immediately checked out the song. I did not find it very memorable but remembered the game and now, almost a year since its release, I finally got my hands on it. Before playing Metal: Hellsinger I actually tried Bullets Per Minute as an earlier installation of rhythm-based FPS… It irritated me so much that I thought I’m just deaf and disabled for the genre… Oh, how wrong I was!

Gameplay. It’s fiery hot as hell! The game does not have an absurd number of different weapons or sigils (buffing items) but the ones presented are unique enough to let you experiment and create different builds. Though there are only 8 levels, each of them not only looks majestic esthetically but works great as an arena for demon slaughtering. The mechanics are put together so well, that I seriously consider Metal: Hellsinger to be the best rhythm-FPS available for the time this review is published! Even if I try to be nitpicky, I can only come up with two small complaints. The character movement seems a bit too slow compared to Doom Eternal and there are no speed buffs in the game at all. The difficulty gap between medium and hard is a bit too large but this becomes less of a problem the more you play and master your skills.

Soundtrack. It’s a hell let loose! The only way not to enjoy it that I can come up with is if a person is not into heavy music. However, if you are a fan of metal, especially death metal, you will absolutely love this game! Sure, the tracks are not as complex and technical as some metal songs but they are composed just right for a rhythm game where you not only have to push a button on beat but also control the surroundings, evade projectiles, and prioritize the enemies. The songs do not seem very memorable by themselves but when mixed with the gameplay they become absolute bangers! The only serious issue of the soundtrack is that it’s not on Spotify and there is nowhere to buy the full album. Seriously, it’s been a year and the only way to listen to these songs is via Youtube! #ADDTHISTOSPOTIFY #RELEASETHEFULLALBUM #SHUTUPANDTAKEMYMONEY

Story. Hella good! I can’t say that it’s outstanding but it’s not bad. It provides a narrative, it gives you more motivation to finish the game, the cutscenes let you have a break between levels, and the ending even has some plot twists and drama. Overall, the story is not a masterpiece but I enjoyed it more than I expected.

In conclusion, Metal: Hellsinger is freaking hell of a game! If you are a metalhead – this is a mustplay! If you like rhythm games or unusual shooters – you should definitely give it a try! If you are looking for something relaxing with butterflies and flowers and slow-paced gameplay – this one is not for you!
