The English dub is a bit stiff but the visuals and the combat are excellent so far in this Nier-like action RPG!

Optimization seems to be spot on as well. I had everything on high except for shadows and textures on medium. At 1440p with no DLSS I was getting 80-140 FPS uncapped.

Can't wait to play the full game!

I'm only a few hours in but here are a couple of thoughts for anyone interested in the game.

- The game runs surprisingly well with no stuttering at all for me. 60 FPS easily obtainable. (Rig below)
- So far the game gives off vibes from the Dreamcast era of gaming. (In a good way)
- The combat plays similar to games like GranBlue Fantasy Relink and Final Fantasy XVI.
- Central hub city gameplay similar to GranBlue/Monster Hunter.
- Customize-able male/female main character through various face, hair, and makeup combinations.
- Voice acted dialogue

Some annoyances so far:

- No lock-on in combat
- Chests annoyingly explode loot everywhere. Even off cliffs if near the edge of the map.
- SFX are very loud. I have them down to 30 with the music at 100 and they are still a bit loud.
- More granular audio control would be nice.
- Says it has DualSense support but I can't get PSX glyphs to appear wired or wireless, but the controller still works. (Yes, Steam Input is disabled)

Overall I'm enjoying the game so far! I'll update this review once I've spent some more time in the game.

A wonderful RPG that plays out like a love letter to other greats from the past, such as Final Fantasy and The Legend of Dragoon.

Broken up into multiple acts, the overall story is an emotional roller coaster ride from start to finish. The Gommage within the first hour sets a somber and depressing tone for what lies ahead for Expedition 33 and how little time one has to live a life in this world. As you journey across the fractured landscape to hopefully stop the Paintress once and for all after sixty seven years of failed expeditions and to finally rebuild humanity along with the once great city of Lumiere.

As you explore this strange world you'll befriend a colorful cast of characters that will grow and react along with you if you choose to engage in conversation with them at camp. Similar to Baldur's Gate, but mostly linear like the main story. There are only a handful of choices you will make as the player throughout the game.

The battle system, while nothing completely new, manages to come in and refine existing systems to near perfection in a similar way the teams on Persona and Metaphor have. Take Persona 5 as a base and mix in The Legend of Dragoon for a remarkably addicting reactive turn-based system with dodge, parry, and QTE mechanics. Once you get all of the systems down it can feel like you're playing a crazy rhythm game about djenting where all of the enemy attacks are polyrhythms trying to take you out of 4/4 and destroy your groove.

If all else fails and you're not good at parrying. Fear not! The game has hundreds of pictos and weapons to customize your characters and make wacky game breaking builds to completely ignore mechanics! My build at the end was a solo build with crazy last stand buffs and ridiculous AP generation from shooting and doing massive damage with multiple turns never even giving the enemy a chance.

The voice talent has done a wonderful job capturing such a wide range of emotion although downplayed sometimes because of some lip syncing issues outside of major cutscenes. The soundtrack is an absolute masterpiece as well. From the compositions down to the mastering it sounds superb with a wide range of themes and styles. The use of the dynamic audio systems within UE5 work beautifully to make tracks seamlessly transition to a lower more intimate ensemble and return to form for epic moments. I'll have these melodies stuck in my head for quite a while I imagine!

The environments are absolutely beautiful with so many little details making you believe it's a real living and breathing world! It's a shame there was no photo mode to really showcase it but I still managed to get quite a few cool screenshots during my play through.

Overall performance was surprisingly good on my aging system:

AMD Ryzen 7 5800X 4.28GHz
Nvidia RTX 3060 Ti 8GB
32 GBs RAM
m2 NVMe SSD

A stable 60FPS is easily obtainable using DLSS at 1440p with a mix of medium and high settings. Uncapped will see 60-110FPS depending on the location and what's happening in the scene. There were at least two times offhand that I can remember an intense slowdown and it's when the game did a LUT/color grading change at the same time as a battle transition. It peaked my VRAM and fell to 8-10FPS for a few seconds and recovered shortly after. Otherwise, smooth sailing for the entire experience.

Overall, I highly recommend this to anyone looking for a classic Japanese style RPG with a modern flair from a new developer out of France. The story is around thirty hours with another thirty hours of side quests with multiple twists and turns if you're craving more! It took me about sixty-five hours or so total to finish the game and get every achievement with a blind play through.

Sorry if I went on ramblin', I don't normally write these but I just felt like I owed it to this wonderful game!

AGS just needs to stop making games. Zero hope left for the new Lord of the Rings MMO after this Aeternum nonsense.

The game is officially dead according to the official Twitter account. Claiming they will only return to work on the game if it becomes profitable. It will never be profitable because they aren't fixing it to begin with.

Do not waste your money on it. The current build is completely unplayable with game breaking bugs and extremely lacking in content. It was clearly a scam from the beginning at this point.

I am extremely disappointed with this game. This is the last game from Pathea Games that I will be purchasing. The developers have done nothing but lie since the game made it from Kickstarter to early access, and now full release on Steam. Multiplayer is just a shell of what was originally promised and the graphics have been downgraded across the board to accommodate the Switch release for some unknown reason. The current screenshots and videos DO NOT reflect the way this game actually looks and should be removed and updated immediately.

I really wish I could refund this game... Live and learn I suppose.
