Hogwarts legacy is a solid 9/10 in almost all regards that a fan of the Harry Potter universe might want from a game set in that world.

There are some technical issues but none (in my experience) game breaking or disrupting and these are the kind that usually get iron out within a few months of launch. Additionally I don't know anything about whatever controversy people are riled up about but frankly with the amount of scandals in the gaming industry these days I'm just too tired to care and I'm not gonna let people being people get in the way of me having a good time in the fantasy world I like.

So about the actual game. Hogwarts castle and surrounding areas are rendered beautifully. It's a nearly transition free open world on foot or broom or beast and engaging with the game feels smooth at all times. There's a good number of Red Dead Redemption style open world set-pieces to make it all come alive and you can visit most of your favourite spots from the books/movies in one way or another. Combat isn't too challenging but it does have a good amount of variety which is a sweet spot for me. Professors giving you game tutorials feels a little weird and I wish that was laid out in text and masked more but it is very helpful to figure how everything works. The story is... Fine, a bit of a mish mash of things that were good in the book stories to capitalize on that IP but really the game is about the world you get to explore and it truly excels in that regards.

Now add a Quidditch DLC (Yeah you can't play quidditch in this game), fix the technical hitches and you have yourself a 10/10 title

I had no idea what I was going into before I started and even until the very end never felt like I knew what to expect. Lots of politics, philosophy, psychology, some science and many big words, some made up. Also lots of text and dialogues but it's all voiced so it's reasonably digestible. Don't even know where to begin laying out a recommendation. If you like RPGs in the sense of playing a role more than levelling up stats and if the art strikes your fancy, give it a shot, you may just love it. Weird as heck.

The game has a lot of issues ranging from content loop and endgame to performance but if you have a machine capable of running it as it is, the core gameplay and visual style are top tier. My experience is also pretty stable at the moment. It's not a 60 euro/dollar game but even for the current price it's debatable how adequate the launch offering is in terms of scope. Personally I think the amount of maps and weapons is... ok for 40 calling back to how good the core gameplay is however some systems are missing. If you love warhammer 40k or liked the vermintide games from Fatshark you'll enjoy it and possibly be more or less upset at the same time. I think this game has a solid chance of getting really good down the road but that's gonna depend on the devs (and investors I guess).

From the review scores I thought it would be good but damn, it's actually shockingly good. If you like metal, rhythm games and the doom vibe, you'll like this as well

Play with friends (Movie night mode with steam remote play), don't think too hard, don't take it too seriously and you'll have a good time.

It's a decent, if sometimes clunky, uninspired sci-fi online shooter with mmorpg fetch quests. Some of the end game objective mechanics are cool. It's unforgiving and difficult. Definitely channeling that fortnite visual style.

Early Access Review
Pretty good banished/anno style city builder but it's got some issues that need to be ironed out in early access - Terrain deformation is great to have but working with it is quite janky and sometimes breaks stuff. Overall it feels like you have limited control over what your people do and sometimes this leads to situations where you can't quite tell if a build site is broken or just taking forever to have someone get to it. Similarly when your buildings deteriorate over time there's no way to ask someone to go and repair them, sometimes they just don't do it and then your only option is to re-build or relocate (which kinda works like a repair but clearly not the intended way for stuff to work). It looks good... But the city builder combat is in the same place it was 20 years ago - one small lump of soldiers awkwardly brawling it out with another small disorganized lump. There are some good fresh features like farming is great and underlying mechanics that govern the system add depth (when they work right) but I would have wished for something more wowing in the genre by 2022. If you want something polished, go play ANNO 1800 and if you want something novel, play Timberborn.

It's alright though.
