Beholder 3 is a long, deep breath of fresh, dystopian air.

I am a lover of the Beholder series. Beholder 1 is one of my favourite games. I’ve purchased it on the PC and two consoles. I just couldn’t get enough of it. So of course, I was ridiculously excited for the third instalment in this series. So far, I am loving it.
This review is from the viewpoint of someone who has played the first two games. Please keep that in mind.

Gameplay

The gameplay is very similar to Beholder 1, especially at the start. The game has a great tutorial for those who are new to the series, but those who have played before will feel right at home.
You work for the Ministry, an all-seeing, all-knowing government. Demoted from your cushy job at the Ministry, you must now manage an apartment building as a glorified janitor and spy for the government. Throughout your time as a building manager, you’ll have to observe your tenants and report any misdeeds to the higher-ups, in the hope of working your way but up inside the Ministry. Alongside this you’ll have to manage your wife and children who have their own wants and expectations from you.
You’ll face many challenges and have to make some hard choices. Do you report a friendly tenant for having a green apple when they are not allowed? Do you spend your hard-earned money buying medicine for a sick child? Do you report your own child if they violate a law? Your choices matter and they will affect those around you, yourself, and your family.
Soon you'll have a chance at another Ministry job (Hail The Glorious Leader!), but along with this comes more challenges. Your co-workers will become prospective new people for you to spy on as you climb the Ministry career ladder. More mysteries are revealed and more questions are left unanswered. Who can you really trust, if anyone at all? What is the right thing for your career and family, and is that the right thing for the country? What happens if it all becomes too much and you can't handle being a building manager and a corporate shill?

Beholder 3 gives you a chance to work two more jobs alongside your real life job, with bosses you'll hate just as much and as little power as you have in real life. But maybe you can be the one to change it. Maybe you can forge a different future for your country. Maybe you can make a difference. Maybe. Just maybe.

Pros:

A very engaging game with a fantastic story.

Choices actually matter. What you choose to do will impact the gameplay.

Challenging gameplay that'll keep you on your toes

Great simplistic graphics

A fantastic third instalment in the series that goes back to its roots and stays true to the previous games in the series

Controller support! I can play from my sofa!

Cons:

Can get very stressful very fast. There is a lot going on after a few hours of gameplay and it can be difficult to manage if you’re not used to it.

A few minor bugs but nothing too noticeable – the controller gameplay can feel a little clunky and surveillance doesn’t work perfectly with it.

Overall, the game is a fantastic one for old fans and new players alike. Join the Ministry today, you wont regret it.
