The only way to enjoy it in its current state is to play multiplayer, which can only happen if people have the EXACT same mods as you (goodby, de-sync sensitivity), and even then, if playing with random people on an RTS has taught me anything, it's that people are extremely competitive and play to win, not to play.
Ergo, there is no way to enjoy this game.
The AI is RUTHELESS, I played-- well, TRIED to play multiple 1v1v1v1 skirmishes with 3 AI opponents, and EVRY TIME I was swarmed by all three at once. I would also get totally wrecked on the campaign... on Moderate difficulty. Which, according to the definition of the word "moderate", should not happen.
As for what you said about the Vinlandsaga map, you're totally right, I've had the exact same experience ! The MOST these AIs would do would be to send scouts. They never migrated, never expanded, never advanced.
Here I was, at the Mythic Age, wondering why nothing was happening and the others were still on classical. They drained their island dry and never moved !
They didn't even send a warship to me !
