Destiny was the first shooter I picked up since Halo, and that's not a love letter to Bungie; rather it's me welcoming FPS games that aren't grounded in hyper-militaristic pseudo-realism.

Destiny offers what I consider to be the best middleground between an open world RPG and a FPS. While not as grand in scale, physically, as an MMO, the worlds are decent sized and highly detailed to explore. Lore geeks will find a mountain of lore, from flavor text to secreted away texts, some of which take a little time and effort to find, which can be rewarding to collect.

As expected of Bungie, the gameplay is solid. Every gun feels unique, even two of the same types. Their individual perks are randomly roll with each drop, meaning you can both get a setup that compliments your play style, as well as experiment with other styles as you get different perk rolls. You can choose one of three classes, each with unique skills and movement abilities. On top of that each class has three elemental subclasses, and within each of those are choices of three different super abilities. Meaning the variation in your play style can be customized quite a bit. include the collection of ships, sparrows, emblems, ornaments, and shaders that can be individually applied to your gear, There's little risk of ending up looking like everybody else as you explore.

The endgame grind can get a bit tedious; the final push to maximize your level can be a crawl at times, but the result is rewarding. Raids are exactly like what you'd expect in an MMO, complex, often times beautiful fights against giant bosses that require communication and planning between you and the rest of your team. This is the only FPS I know of, personally, that brute forcing through a hard fight works. (though when you're a high enough level, it's a valid strategy for strikes and low-end bosses.

Ultimately it's either a game you will love or hate. It has equal parts fans and haters in both the RPG and FPS camps. Since it's move to steam and release as a free-to-play model, at the very least there's no risk in trying it out and seeing if you enjoy it.
