A good sequel. Everything you loved about the first game expanded upon and changed just enough to be interesting to play through again.

If you want Ready or Not with an "Operator twist" and less of the evidence gathering/ spending 15 minutes to circle the map and make sure you ziptied every civilian and dead suspect before you can finish the mission stuff this is the answer. The attention to detail is top notch. Awesome customization and gun porn comparable to Tarkov. Best implementation of recoil and weapon handling I've ever seen in a video game, by far, which means it's one of the most satisfying games to move around and shoot in.

I'd say the game is best experienced with a group of friends, but the smaller sized playerbase is active and you can get on servers and play with randoms as long as you're not being a dickwad and are open to communicating. Everyone I've met has been mature and welcoming.

Biggest draw back is the AI, but you can tweak them with the in game settings to make them tolerable.

The developer has their roadmap posted for everyone to follow and there are a lot of things coming that you may feel are lacking. Development is pretty slow but worth keeping an eye on if you grew up on games like the original Ghost Recon and R6 series.

I've played for 5 hours and can barely get through the tutorial without dying and the steelies don't shoot back.

TL;DR- Scum is like a modded DayZ server that has added things you may or may not want in your survival game.

Overall it's a more "gamey" version of DayZ. Don't let that fool you into thinking it's any less complex. The survival mechanics are deep and very deadly.

There's live traders with a full in game economy, a mini-map, mechs that patrol the high tier loot. Think the same general gameplay loop of DayZ but a totally different vibe. The island feels more alive, there's more things going on than the imposing cold, dead feel of DayZ. And the player interactions are a little bit different because you can spawn anywhere in Scum, so anywhere on the map you could run into someone super geared or a fresh spawn and everything in between, as opposed to the general fresh spawns being huddled on the coast in the south.

Overall I like it and do recommend it but if I had to choose just one I would still go DayZ because of the overall feel of the game. Things that I think Scum has going for it are better graphics, more fleshed out and better crafting and building with it's own UI, and better(?) zombie AI. It has a bright future with constant development being done.

Also there is no mod support as of my writing this review, but I understand it is coming one day, which may be the final nudge I need to get off of DayZ.

This is a weird one for me. It's like DayZ or Scum without any of the stuff that makes those games an experience to play. I'd recommend it for someone looking for a "DayZ/Scum lite" version that just want to loot and shoot a few things around an open world and move along without delving deep into the survival aspect these types of games go for with base building, stockpiling inventories, illness and metabolism management, etc.

Maybe that will change with future updates and that could be what you're looking for so I still recommend it with caveats that if you're looking for a deep survival game this isn't there yet and I don't know if they ever intend to get it in that space. It's one of those where I wish they had a third option other than recommend or not because it does what it does well but you should know what it does.

Side note the AI is awful and needs a rework. PVP is good.

It's one of those make your own game kinda games. A military sandbox. It's not as feature full as Arma 3 but it was never supposed to be. As a technical test of the Arma 4 engine it works well, with some jank to it. Tons of modding already.
