It's fun being well above the recommended specs and still being unable to keep the game even close to a consistent 60fps.

Something has to be wrong with the textures in this game, some the textures in this game look like PS2 textures. Unfortunately that's not an exaggeration, some (not all) textures legitimately look like a blurry clump of small squares, something more akin to pixel art than a real 3D item. It's very strange. It's possible that textures could be to blame for the game's bad-performance as well, but unfortunately I have no idea. The art style carries the game, but it still looks blurry and washed-out at times. I'm personally not a snob for graphics, to me, smooth gameplay is by far the priority but terrible optimisation severely affects your gameplay in this title.

The gameplay loop is fun, as to be expected, and it's fun enough that I'm enjoying the game through all the technical problems but I pray that Capcom will find away to improve performance, but unfortunately I don't think they will. But this game at your own peril. If you have a console, it honestly might be worth taking the graphical hit just to buy yourself slightly more performance stability.

Single player content is fun, and a good basic teaching tool for new players, albeit a little too simple for experienced players. Online connections is great. Vanilla balance, though not perfect, is pretty solid for Vanilla launch. Art design is great. Music is hit or miss. Lots of fun to be had here.

This game is probably the goofiest fighting game I've personally every played. The mobility is a little stiff but I find the neutral interactions wild and fun. I'm glad that the game is getting some more support now. I'll recommend it again.

After playing New Genesis for about 55 hours I hit max level for my Main Class and my Sub Class (as of the Kvaris region update) and I have to say, I've thoroughly enjoyed the game. I probably could have hit max level a little sooner if I was a little wiser, but I enjoyed the process.

PROS
  • Free to play & Free to have fun
  • Can change classes at any time in town allowing to level-up and main multiple classes
  • Helpful community
  • Fun combat
  • Decently satisfying gameplay loop
  • Decently generous FREE rewards for cosmetic unlock opportunities
  • Interesting class variety
  • Good weapon variety
  • Fun & hilarious player expression
  • Pretty world with unique designs and interesting biomes
  • Helpful and pretty kind community
  • Town/overworld tracks are bops

CONS
  • New Genesis cosmetics are a little lacking compared to the content ported over from PSO2
  • The story after the Aelio region becomes pretty detached and turns into a monument for generic anime stereotypes
  • Lots of random loot and items that may confuse a new player
  • Some regions for grinding can be empty for new players slowing progress, while other regions are thriving (doesn't stop progression at all, just has spikes of slow and fast grinding)
  • The core gameplay loop is better described by a friend or person in the world than the game
  • Some of the UI and menus feel a little dated and confusing, but isn't terribly impossible to navigate
  • New content is slow to release

TL;DR Overview

The game has been thoroughly enjoyable. Though there is paid content for quality of life and for some cosmetics, the game is still pretty generous with its rewards given to the player that it doesn't feel like there's a huge disparity between paid/unpaid players. The core gameplay loop is fun, and you can spend many mindless hours in the pretty world, leveling up and getting gear. All in all, a very enjoyable free experience. Just remember to ask for help! (Haven't spent any money after 74 hours).

A Couple of Random Thoughts

This game has been really fun. In the beginning I was extremely confused on how everything worked, but with a little help from a friend, and the community, I was able to start to figure things out myself. From the beginning the combat had me hooked. I really enjoyed the weapon and class variety, and the fact that it was more action combat, rather than strict RPG combat, kept me engaged. The core gameplay loop is simple and easy but satisfying. However, I did need a little help figuring it out at first. The game did a good job of telling me everything that I could do, but not everything that I should do. However, the loop is simple. Also, a lot of the crafting items, or free items that you get from the battle pass, all have explanations on them that explain who you talk to in order to use them. Once I started to talk to specific NPCs about specific items, I started to figure out the mass variety of loot that I received. Lots of different loot is used to upgrade weapons, to add augments (items that you attach to equipment for passive ability buffs), items for different stores, items to exchange for free seasonal content, items to enhance your RNG for trying to min/max loot, cosmetic loot, and many more. There's a lot going on, but I recommend not trying to swallow the whole pill all at once, and figuring specific things out over time

Asking for party help, or playing with friends is the best way to go, however, if you feel like you've figured out the gameplay loop and know what you're doing, playing solo can be just as enjoyable. I've spent many hours without friends hitting individual objectives, leveling up, and getting the money, items, and gear that I needed to min/max my character.

When it comes to the free-to-play aspect of the game, I honestly feel like the game is pretty generous. I've never ran out of money that I need to upgrade my character's equipment, I've unlocked plenty of free cosmetic items that I now have equipped, albeit anyone that was ported from PSO2 into New Genesis definitely looks cooler than I do, I have plenty of Star Gems that I used to easily buy the "premium" battle pass, which has given me some nice items, and the seasonal content has added a fun free way to earn a few cosmetics and some really solid augments for my weapons. The only things I'm missing out on is a larger inventory, the ability to sell items to players through the shop (which I've had plenty of money for what I've wanted, except specific cosmetics), and I don't get to buy premium scratch tickets (loot boxes), but to be fair the cosmetics that can be earned in the premium scratches haven't enticed me at all. After 70+ hours of playing this game for free, I'd actually like to give Sega some money because I've appreciated the work of the company, however, the paid-content hasn't enticed me enough quite yet.

Overall it's been a great experience, and it's definitely free to play, and free to have fun. There's a couple of paid gimmicks here and there but all they really offer is a few quality of life improvements and "premium" cosmetics. I haven't needed any money to have fun, earn cosmetics, and to level-up, which has been refreshing. Combat is fun and engaging, and the gameplay loop is simple enough that I can spend hours on end relaxing and enjoying the grind. I definitely recommend the game, just always ask players for help and you'll have a good time.

Early Access Review
So far I've really enjoyed this game and I've almost unlocked all the decks. The game is really fun and engaging and the art-style is very clean and very simple. I wish there was a little bit more flow to the counter animations or to everyone's movement but the animations are definitely not bad.

One other request, which may come from inexeperience, I feel like the "aggressive deck" needs balancing changes. When in a small room you have almost no counter options, no block options, only movement. However, movement decreases your combo meter which the aggressive deck thrives off of. It causes for more damage to be taken than given.

I'm very mixed with this review. Fundamentally it's a solid game with very simple and easy to pick up and play characters. I have my personal gripes with some of the core mechanics, no ducking, no dashing, large chip damage, and very few skills to negate projectiles cause for the game to lean heavily in the zoner's favor. This is frustrating but not necessarily a problem unless you are someone who is new trying to learn the game. For some this system can seem very easy to abuse and turn away new or casual players that don't have the determination to learn the match-ups in order to deal with spammers.

The netplay is very good. I have played people with some god-awful connections but 90% of the time, it's still viable. Each character has their own mechanic which is very fun. It's also free for online competitive play and practice mode. Considering that all of my friends don't play fighting games, I have no complaint with purchasing the $19.99 mode that allows local and online versus with friends.

My only other problem, which is probably only personal, is that all cosmetics and custom animations for intros/exits are all on daily/weekly rotation. For some it may provoke that "I need to buy it before it goes away" feeling, however, I personally would have spent a lot more money on this game if I had a larger variety of options, or could just purchase content outright.

TL;DR
Easy to learn characters, great netaplay, easy to spam turning off new/casual players, $19.99 to play with friends locally or online, and daily rotation items cause the cosmetics department to be a little scarce.

This review was written not from my personal opinion but to state potential positives and negatives so you can use your own bias to determine whether or not this game is for you.

Basic Overview

The art style is noir-style black and white and uses red accents for scarves and attacks, the game is grindy for better or for worse due to its rogue-like nature, the character designs are (in my opinion) fantastic whether it be the monsters or daughters, the lore is very intriguing, and though a strategy game, the combat is very fluid once the core concept of the timeline has been grasped.

Potential Positives

-The combat flows well due to how the timeline-system works

-Character designs are great, ranging from sleek Castlevania/Strider insipred daughters, to horrific 17th century medical professional inspired enemies.

-Several enemy types and designs with their own unique and learnable hunting patterns

-Puzzle-style bosses to keep you quick on your feet and allows for difficult but satisfying battles

-Two different unlockable skill choices for each class after reaching specific character-level milestones, and an assortment of memories (additional perks for skills) allow for some decent customization options.

Potential Negatives

-The game encourages and almost forces grinding to a moderate extent

-Repeated map-types

-Difficult game

-Moderate learning-curve

-Requires out of combat lore reading in order to learn enemies' specific hunting and attack patterns which is a crucial part of gameplay

-May require a book of notes in order to remember enemy patterns

Potential In-Betweeners

-Black and White, with red accented art style may appeal to some but turn off others

-Only 3 classes for daughters, which may be too little for some, or may become more accessible for others who want to master their playstyle

-Mostly dark ambient music only changing into heavier metal for larger battles, mostly bosses

-Rogue-like game, you will die and get game over, and you will have to start back at chapter 1 After each death, however, you are at least given passive bonuses to help improve gameplay for your next run and even skip chapters.

-Lots of readable lore turns off some but interests others. Much of the lore is unlocked by defeating enemies and completing specific challenges.

-Story is hard to follow without reading specific lore memories and bestiaries

-Difficult decision making for character choices. You will have to sacrifice a lot of your characters to heal other characters or to progress further in the game.

Thanks!

I hope this helped you in better understanding Othercide! I personally am in love with the game and have played it during all my free-time since my purchase.

Dev Quality of Life/Bugs/Other Requests

- The ability to filter through daughters (active/resting/class/level/etc.) in the out of combat menu

-After enemy codex has been unlocked, creating an option so that we can see enemy hunting styles in combat as well as in the codex

-There are some hiccups with the UI where, after clicking an ability and an appropriate tile, the action will not occur without re-clicking the ability and the appropriate tile multiple times

-New maps

-A potential boss-rush mode

I think we can all agree that Capcom has made some very frustrating development choices with this game. However I'm here to review the game, not the company. I haven't had any problems with this game on my PC. I originally bought the game for my PS4 and the vast majority of my gameplay is there. In terms of mechanics I personally enjoy this game more than Ultra Street Fighter IV. It's simple enough to welcome new players but still technical enough it can welcome any new player into the realities of a competitive fighter. I enjoy the art style and the character variety. The only complaint I have is how most of the game is locked behind DLC. I definitely recommended just purchasing the Arcade Edition and save yourself any frustration. It's also nice how some DLC can be bought with in game currency, so it's not all bad. Overall SFV is an enjoyable experience and something a recommend to anyone who's starting out and trying to join the competitive fighting game scene.
