I recommend this game because it's Doom, and it's genuinely really fun as you would expect, HOWEVER...

There's not really as much variety in the combat as much as in Eternal. Eternal had more enemies with weaknesses to specific weapons in your kit. Eternal had you on your toes, managing your health, armor, and ammo like resources. Remember using the flamethrower to ignite a demon with fire and then killing it with the chainsaw to get a ton of ammo and health or whatever it was? Remember when Eternal's campaign literally began with a dialogue box telling the player they'd need to learn to use the right weapons on the right demons in order to master their resource management, or whatever it said?

In Dark Ages, you have a shield. You can use it to parry, so, that's the feature of this game. They added parrying. It's actually fun as ♥♥♥♥, not gonna lie. In this game, you Stand and Fight. You can use the shield to block an attack entirely, but it will damage the shield and eventually break it, and then you need to survive for a few seconds without a shield until a new one appears. But if you block an attack that can be parried (which ALL demons have a few of in their attack sequences), instead of damaging your shield, you're rewarded with a powerful melee charge, allowing you to hit back. This creates combat which is genuinely really fun and worthy of a DOOM game. It just comes with a problem that the devs couldn't figure out how to solve...

The issue with the parry mechanic is that all the 'big' demons in this game kind of feel the same. You just learn the parry timings and then you're big chillin. If you're good at timing attacks and such, you will have no issue sightreading the attack patterns of each new demon that is introduced throughout the campaign. I honestly recommend going with a higher difficulty than you otherwise would for your first playthrough of this game.

The funny thing is, it actually sort of makes sense in regards to the lore of the modern DOOM games as far as I'm aware. This game is a prequel to Eternal, so it does make sense that this is the game where the Slayer learns they can light a demon on fire and they'll drop armor. In Eternal, this mechanic goes on to become the flamethrower. It's like... Dark Ages shows us the crude, original versions of the Slayer's kit before it evolves into what it is in Eternal. If that is why Dark Ages was designed this way all along, well, we gotta respect the developers for that.

I hope they do something about this though. Give the demons some basic methods to resist some of our weaponry, or something. They have an opportunity to kick ass with the DLC and I hope they can find a FUN way to force more variety in the combat

This game is fantastic. This is a game made by passionate devs with innovative ideas. This is a game powerful enough to influence Sony to rollback its stupid decisions, and that's a really difficult thing to do.

easy to learn, hard to master. this is a great platformer with tight controls and clever level design. it's very much built for speedrunning. if you like Celeste, I highly recommend this

most of the negative reviews are performance complaints. This isn't "poorly optimized," it just uses full path-tracing. you need a good card to run this. if you've got one, it's just Portal but pretty.
