Prefacing this by mentioning that I've volunteered my time to quite a number of Early Access demos and closed Betas recently. Some are more impressive than others but none have gotten me excited enough to spend time writing more than a couple of sentences of feedback. So the fact that Outlawed deserves paragraphs worth of promotion on my part should tell you something.
What makes Outlawed that great, you ask? Rock solid competence. Most everything about Outlawed feels good. The gunplay is great. The server stability feels great. The AI is surprisingly decent enough to throw grenades and climb up/down ladders. The UI both in and out of a mission feels good. The semi-low-poly style of characters is a really nice compromise between retro GTA and modern GTA. From start to finish, the gameplay loop just works. I don't know anything about the developers Okami but either A)they're pros or B)they put a lot of work into testing (maybe both) but the result here feels AA.
No game is perfect, however, so I'll mention a few negatives. First, there are some bugs present that will occasionally ruin the fun. Sometimes the AI will get stuck in a wall where they can shoot you while they are shielded from your shots by the geometry. English localization could be better but for the most part you can figure out what the devs are getting at thru context and familiarity w/ the extraction genre. Rarely, the game will crash and you lose everything not in your lockbox. My next couple of complaints are subjective: the loot and humor of the game is crass and adult which may rub some people the wrong way. Additionally, some progression is unlocked by making players turn in loot which is otherwise low value. I actually think this is a fairly OK means to slow players down from reaching "Endgame" within a couple of days but that, too, I can see annoying some folks. Finally (and I realize this will come with time) but both player population and overall content is currently fairly limited (compared to GTA online--which I don't think is a fair comparison but it needs to be stated nonetheless).
All that being said, I'm a ways away from having everything unlocked and I'm excited to put in more time. I'm also excited to see where the developers take this game next as it has potential galore and they are very clearlay a capable team.
