Quite possibly the best Final Fantasy, and one of the best JRPGs of all time. This and FFVI are PEAK.

I do remember this ♥♥♥♥ requiring a separate login though, that is just ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ stupid.

In many ways, this is the best Final Fantasy game. Can't speak for this specific port, though.

Not a total fan of the gameplay loop of "Go to this area you've been to many times now to fight the same enemies, find the same loot, and best the same (but now harderer) bosses as before", but the combat, atmosphere, world, and overall brilliant way this game works to be a piece of ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ ♥♥♥♥ is unmatched and outshines most of the game's flaws; the combat especially is top-tier and deserves extra praise. Stellar game, one of my favorite RPGs, just don't get too attached to your characters because you might be in for a rude awakening, bwa ha ha...

This and Bloodborne I'd say are the two best modern FromSoft games. Stop reading this review and play it NOW!

PRAISE THE SUN!

This is the first FromSoft game I've ever played, and probably the one I have the most experience with. It's also my least favorite in the trilogy; that's why I'm gonna complain about it in this review.

While Dark Souls 1 and 2 had their respective shares of ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥, I've been able to look past their more negative aspects and appreciate their better traits, especially with DS2 which, though it is the most controversial of the trilogy, does have a lot of good ideas - some of which live on to this day! (That, and some of the worst things about DS2 can be avoided, such as lighting up the Gutter with a torch, for example.) With Dark Souls 3 however, its more lackluster parts - chief amongst those being the linear level design, its alright story, and the world, perhaps my biggest gripe with the game - what you get if you look past those, is... some pretty good gameplay, albeit more "Action" than "RPG". Just some, "pretty good gameplay"... Perhaps I've just played this game too much and have become disenfranchised with it, but I dunno, there just seems to be a certain, probably dark soul that DS 1 and 2 share that makes their stories and worlds so much more special to me, whereas in DS3 that soul is greatly missing and only occasionally shining through, exchanged in favor of making the game more "streamlined". You won't get a memorable intro as you did with Dark Souls 1. You won't get a main hub area that is both beautiful, connected to the world, and yet so mysterious, as you did with Dark Souls 2. There are very few areas that you will enter and be absolutely stunned by, whereas in DS 1 and 2 each area was in many ways a new world of wonder. While DS 1 and 2 had their own shares of issues, I wouldn't consider either of them "bland"; DS3, on the other hand, does at times feel "bland" to me. (Also I can't not mention this, and it serves as a good example: you really go to the Ringed City, a beautiful, Anor Londo-esque place, only to trudge through some more ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ swamp? Are you ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ kidding me?)

Now, this game is great, and for all the ♥♥♥♥ I give it, it does actually have many amazing aspects, such as the mood they were going for, bosses and combat, references to previous entries, and giant one-shotting crabs; when compared to Dark Souls 1 and 2 though, two other amazing games, Dark Souls 3 just happens to have the worst combination of things going for and against it, in my book. Anyways, I'm done ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ about this game. If you've got this far into this review, then why don't you play it and see for yourself, why don'tcha? It's ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ Dark Souls, after all. This series is legendary!


TL;DR: This game is great and a fitting send-off for this legendary game series, but ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ do I think the most of it pales in comparison to the first two if you really sink your teeth into these games - except the combat, of course. THAT, OR I'M A ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ ♥♥♥♥♥♥.

The port worked fine enough for me. Also the game is great, but you already knew that.

This game is old as ♥♥♥♥. The story and world (oh, the world!) is good, don't get me wrong, but the actual gameplay portion is clunky and often exceedingly cryptic for no reason. This game is absolutely classic, but I don't blame anybody that uses a walkthrough or even edits their saves to see this game to completion - or even just past its start.

TL;DR: Absolutely classic game, but also old as all hell.
