2D Soul-like Action With Stunning Pixel Artworks!

Dark Devotion. This is the 2D action game made by Hibernian Workshop and published by The Arcade Crew & Maple Whispering. It has some features from Soul-like games. The commonly used Soul type game has high difficulty levels through various settings that make players achieve a sense of accomplishment in gameplays. Likewise, Dark Devotion sought to express some of these features in the game.

If you have played some kind of these games so far, you might find something familiar and nostalgic in Dark Devotion. For example, Dark Soul, Salt and Sanctuary, Hollow Knight, Dead Cells, Momodora and so on. Such games attract players with similar but different appeal. In the case of Dark Devotion, there is a unique dark vibe and delicate pixel art. However, there are many inconveniences in the gameplay itself. Often, developers tend to confuse difficulties and inconveniences. This game is an action game, but there is no jump, movement between maps is not free, and control is somewhat rough. These things may be intended by the developer, but they may provide a game experience that is not satisfactory to the player.

Of course, when these inconveniences begin to get used to you, the true value of the game begins to show. Especially, the bosses are about 18, and the early 3-4 stage bosses are quite uncomfortable and difficult, because the skill and stats of the player have not been sufficiently strengthened, and the game system is not kind and somewhat tricky. However, if you hand them over well, the game becomes more fun and addictive. The play time is about 10 hours, and the attack pattern of the bosses is somewhat simple, so if you challenge about 30 times, you will be able to reach the ending.

Pros:
  • Good Vibe & OST
  • Multilingual Supports
  • Challenging & Addictive
  • Outstanding Pixel Artworks
Cons:
  • Balancing & Optimization
  • No Jumps & No Returns
  • Inconvenient Game System
  • Somewhat Simple Boss Battles

Conclusion
Dark Devotion. It's a nice 2D pixel action game worth trying, but some shortcomings stand out. Specifically, it is more like a feeling that a game is more inconvenient than difficult. There is no jump action in this game, and once you start the new stage, it is impossible to move between the maps that you already passed. It's a soul-like game, but boss battles have simple attack patterns. Nonetheless, its great dot pixel arts fully are really great and make players immersed in this game. If you are hesitant to play or would like to give up this game, it is recommended to try until you hit the 3rd or 4th boss first. It is possible to experience it within the refundable playtime(2 hours). After defeating the 4th boss, the game will definitely be more fun.

Game Score: 8/10
