Dear Esther probably needs no introduction to many long-standing Half-Life players, nor to many long-standing Steam users, but for those who do not know it, or never cared before now, I'll just say that it is a beautiful game deserving of its reputation as one of the finest games on this platform.

Stunning visuals are accompanied by hauntingly beautiful music, both perfectly symbolising not only the Hebridean isle on which you find yourself, but also a sense of isolation, and the sadness the story weaves into your consciousness. All three work together to bring you into the time and place of this game.

Whilst true that nothing much happens compared to, say, Half-Life 2, more happens than you at first realise, as it sucks you in and plays with your emotions and perception of reality. The walking gives you time to fill in the blanks and interpret things in your own way, not just what someone else wants to you think, which was pretty groundbreaking for its day, but this game doesn't feel old.

Now updated with commentary from the original mod's creators, the Landmark Edition is guaranteed to have something for most people. I bought the original many years ago, and played through many times. Having not touched it for a few years, and having just played through the Landmark Edition, I can say that this is still well worth the money being charged for it, even after all this time.
