This game plays like ADHD co-op Elden Ring. You speedrun everything, move fast, play fast, and when it works it feels amazing. The actual formula here is a 9/10 and so much fun.

That being said, the new player experience is atrocious. You will have no idea wtf is happening, will do everything wrong, and be weak and lose. Unless you have a friend to teach you, or you consume a lot of video guides, this initial learning phase will take hours. 75% of my friends refunded the game before they hit 2 hours because it just was that painful.

If you make it through the initial hardships, the game is great. Good luck.

As a big fan of This War of Mine + Death Stranding, this game had a lot of appeal. And I'm happy to say that The Alters delivers what it promises. The choices are interesting and feel meaningful, the characters are distinct (if a little stereotypical at times), and the gameplay loop is very fun. The writing can feel cheesy at times, but I can forgive it because there is an earnest soul to this game, which is endearing. I would say overall the game is a Strong 7, maybe Light 8, depending on your taste. I expect it will get better too, as they smooth out some of the typos, bugs and possibly add new QoL features and content etc.

For now, I'll wait a couple years then come back and play it again and choose different a different path...

One of the best sandbox simulation games I've ever played. And multiplayer + modding just elevates this game from an 8/10 to a 10/10 experience. Honestly what a banger game.

Is this game a must play? No.

But if it's something that intrigues you based on the screenshots and trailers, go for it. Especially if you get it on sale, like I did.

It's a fun little piece of art, that doesn't require too much out of the player, but the world is fun to visit in, briefly.

Even unmodded this game is a blast. Would definitely recommend playing on hardcore/ironman mode. Having my 20 hour colony almost collapse in a spectacular failure cascade, but saving it in the 11th hour (after more than half my Colonists died) and building back stronger is one of the best feelings I've had in a game.

After 40 hours I’ve cleared all the story content and can’t wait for more. The writing and voice acting in this game is S tier. Every single NPC in the world has a personality, a point of view, even if they’re not involved directly in the plot. It just makes the city of Sanctuary feel like a vivid, evolving place full of real people. Super grounding.

This is a VERY immersive game. All of the design decisions that some people complain about (having only one whisper/bonfire to fast travel to, forcing you to traverse the map, gathering and crafting, farming materials for food etc) I am a big fan of. The maps are maze-like and full of secrets, and opening up shortcuts is always satisfying. By the end of my playthrough I had memorized the zones and was heading out into the wilderness without constantly having to check my map.

There is still a level of jank that I was willing to overlook (stuck spots, getting out of bounds and dying, some visual glitches), as the core gameplay is super fun. It’s like Dark Souls and V Rising had a baby. After 40 hours I’m putting the game down to let the devs cook but will come back at 1.0 to try a dex or magic build.

tl;dr: One of the best idle games I've ever played, and this is coming from someone who has never played Runescape.

I love that you can play this game actively, or passively. If I'm bored I can tackle some more active goals, or if I'm busy I can set it and forget it for up to 24 hours. Cross platform cloud saves are a HUGE plus, as I can access my accounts from any computer or device. There's so much content here, and the extra modes (adventure and relic hunt) add so much replayability that you could easily sink 1-2 years of playtime into this thing if you're chasing full completion w/o mods. Oh btw, mod support means you can tailor the game however you'd like (although I'm happily playing Vanilla).

The dollars spent to hours enjoyed ratio is off the charts.

Great concept, well executed. The gameplay is great, and I think they nailed the progression curve. But gameplay aside-- I found the writing to be so good, and the story so interesting, that it was hard to stop playing until I achieved the end. And even though I've just seen the credits roll, I think there's still A LOT more to do...

I don't know why I slept on this game for so long, but for a free to play FPS game it is insanely good.

This game feels like the final boss of FPS games though, as it combines so many aspects of other shooters and has a high skill ceiling. In other words, it's a sweatfest but very fun.
