It has some fun ideas, but very uninteresting and limiting gameplay mechanics. You memorise entries of possible hazards, listen to complaints, then attempt to correctly identify the problem. Sometimes access to the reference is taken away from you and you have to rely on your own memory. It's incredibly basic, has no real twist or surprises, and could really have benefited from just about any kind of additional gameplay elements.

A tentative recommendation.

Beautifully hand animated, but the puzzles really drag and have a lot of elements of traditional P&C Moonlogic to them. There is a lot of backtracking and slow animation that makes solving a puzzle you already figured out take way too long, which ends up exacerbating your frustrations. Initial character writing is okay, but later NPC's you encounter end up coming across like cartoon figures with some very bad dialogue, the consistency of quality is really absent. A lot of the negative feelings I had were somewhat alleviated by the finale, which actually ends on a very strong note. I doubt I'll ever play it again, but it's not entirely forgettable.

Revised Review:
Following the release of Void Shadows I revisited the game hoping that the bugs I had experienced had been taken care of. I'm glad to say that I suffered no major issues and encountered none of the game-breaking bugs that plagued my initial attempts. If you are a fan of CRPG's and the rich lore of 40K, you'll probably enjoy this game.

Original Review:
The amount of bugs in this game makes an otherwise interesting story almost unplayable. Once I hit chapter 4, glitches and broken quests became so frequent I had to shelf the game. It's a shame since the setting and story are both excellent. I want this game to be good, but in it's current state I don't think I can really give it a recommendation.

I'll return to it someday, and if patches have fixed enough of the issues I may reverse my verdict.

Such an incredibly cozy game. I just wish there was more of it.

Games usually try and immerse you by making you feel like the protagonist you are playing as. In Doom, you feel like the tough as nails doom-slayer, Red Dead makes you feel like an old west outlaw, Cyberpunk makes you feel like an enhanced street-samurai. These games do all they can to try and reinforce this fantasy.

Starfield makes you feel like... a video-game protagonist. That seems to be the core theme of nearly every interaction I had with this game. A superficial veneer of characters and quests that exist solely to revolve around the main character of the Starfield story. None of this world feels real or immersive, every character, faction, city, organisation, what-have you seems to exist to cater to the player, and will remain in stasis until you show up to prod the plot along, then goes back to being irrelevant the minute you turn your back.

In a word, I echo what has already been said by a million other players: "A mile wide and an inch deep."

Absolutely toxic developer injects his lunatic conspiracy nonsense into his patch notes. Avoid supporting this garbage.

The art style looked interesting, but the controls are a constant struggle, the game-play isn't much fun, the story is trying too hard to be gritty but just comes across as crude for the sake of being crude. I played this for about an hour and don't imagine I'll be returning to it.

I do not understand the appeal of this game. I'm into the premise, and enjoy immersive walking sims, but this game sorely tested my patience. The whole "procedurally generated" marketing line was just a flat out lie, the game is on rails the whole time, all it does is a minimal shuffling of the scenes.

This could be forgiven if the story was in any way interesting, but I found myself disliking almost every single character in this story. There is an irredeemably horrible news reporter, the two idiot bankrobbers who try way too hard to come across as wacky lovable goofs instead of a**holes who rob and threaten runaway teenagers, and a serial killer who the game actually tries to frame as some kind of antihero by the end of the game. The writing for all these characters is painfully bad, and I found myself gritting my teeth from the lack of options to call them out for their crappy behavior.

I'm tempted to say this was the worst game I played in 2021. Of course there were objectively worse games, but I think this one qualifies because it just squanders so much potential.
3/10 - Do not recommend.
