Even the MK1 TT had a built in retractable cover so you could hide the radio in the center console, to minimize distractions inside the cabin. The idea is you're supposed to focus on driving and enjoying the TT without all sorts of unnecessary information in your face at all times. The modern ones still keep up that tradition.
