It's hard to understand what these developers were thinking, or what kind of strange pressure they were under. The core mechanics and gameplay found here are solid and entertaining, and that is usually the hardest part to nail in a game. However, everything around that core is a chore.

I am playing Borderlands 3 with multiple mods that remove dialogue and speed up animations, and the game still plays out incredibly slowly. There is a lot of starting and stopping, all the time, and then you have to sit through a lot of exposition from some uninportant side character, with nothing much to do because progression is tied to these monologues. Story in a game that is basically about upgrading loot should be skippable, but no... even with mods you still need to sit through the animations and so on.

If you add that to the fact that the difficulty is quite low overall, certainly lower than the two games before it, you end up with a great game being held back by the developers' obsession with the idea that they are great storytellers and that somehow this is the main point of the game. All the praise heaped upon Borderlands 2's story must be at fault here, but that was a juvenile story to begin with, propped up by interesting characters.

I can't say I recommend it, even though that parts that you are actually allowed to play are very fun. It often just feels like the game is wasting your time.
