For the price of nothing this is an OK game, similar to what you used to find on sites that hosted games made in Flash. Complete with a slew of amateuristic jankiness, too much for my patience.

Nova Drift is, as of right now, my favorite arena-swarm-survival-game (this genre sorely needs to get it's own denomination).

The steering might take a bit to get used to at first (not twin stick or even normal up=north etc., instead thrust always makes the ship go in the direction it's facing and strafing only becomes available if you take that as an upgrade when you level up), but once you get over that minimal hump of a learning curve, you are in for a real treat (I found that playing with mouse and keyboard, with remapped buttons, worked much better for me than a handheld gamepad).

Sleek and clear graphics, thumping music that varies between more ambient space zen and in-your-face acid trance that gets the adrenaline flowing (imagine a subdued mix of the music from Wipe Out and Thumper).

HUGE amount of varied weapons and upgrades, that each can make you play the game in a very different way. When the game begins you pick one weapon, one ship body type, and one shield, you can always change later on in the run but you never have more than one of each at any one time. After that you begin to load up on different mods, as they are called in this game, each time you level up, that will make you shoot faster or harder, make your shots target seeking, and so on. There are also "ultimate mods" that will become available to you if you have the picked the prerequsite mods.

My most successful run so far was one where my ship could cloak and move around invisible, while the ship's shield inflicted burning damage to anything within range. Firing any kind of weapon or building any kind of constructs (huge selection of constructs such as drones or mines, and upgrades for them, so that you can play a 100% focused carrier ship if you want) while stealthed makes you visible to the enemies again, so I took and upgrade that removed the ability to fire any weapon and in return boosted my shields. Another upgrade I took boosted my shields once again, for the cost of lowering the ship's hull (health points) by 85%. In the end, with loads and loads of shield and fire damage focused upgrades, I cruised around like a miniature sun, igniting everying around me at the expense of my shields while having almost no hull/health points, so a fine balance had to be maintained.
And this is only one way of making a pure shield build! Not to mention the vast amount of various builds you can create with the twelve weapons available (at the time of this writing).

Too easy? Make the game harder by adding various in-game modes to your runs.
Too hard? Turn on the in-game mode that makes it a more casual and relaxed experience (although no unlocks will be granted in this mode).

No meta progression, except if you count the unlocks you get from simply playing, longer runs giver more points to the local account, which in turn gives you acccess to more upgrade paths to choose from the next time you play (the first few times you play you can choose between three different ships, then after a few runs you can choose between five, and so on). So no need to fiddle with grind for meta upgrade points, every build path is taken care of in the actual individual game loop. Love that.

Local leader/score board where you can also see what build that particular run used. Global leaderboard coming, maybe, hopefully?


All in all, it's a highly enjoyable just-one-more-run modern arcade game. If it had been an arcade game thirty years ago it would have eaten all my coins, that's for sure.

The game is unfinished and abandoned. Whish is really sad, it had so much potential. If it was completely free, then it might have been worth a recommendation. Maybe. As it is now it's only for the die-hard colony enthusiasts, those who make and play with community made mods. But still, it's an abandoned, unfinished buggy game with little to no end-game content, that is asking you to pay real money to play it.

I payed full price for this way back in the stone age while the game was in Early Access, and then after some time it suddenly "released". supposedly "complete". Another one of those cautionary tales about how you should not buy an Early Access game, that might or might not change.

One of the best games of all time. I first played when it was newly released, many years ago (several times), long before it became available here on Steam, and then again here to check out the GOTY edition and get the Steam achievements. This game is a masterpiece of a game.
I was quite surprised to find that I had not written any kind of review, even though the game is both old and incredibly good. And it will still be good X years from now. One of the best.

It really is sad that PopCap Games got aquired by Electronic Arts, because after that, no more games like the ones PopCap used to make, has been released.

I've tried to play this game several times now, both the art style and the core game play are highly appealing to me. But, I find playing the game to be extremly frustrating; the sluggish controls (with 8BitDo SN30 pro+, really good pad I use for almost all my gaming pad needs) makes misses feel cheap more than often than it should. And speaking of misses, there is another thing that frustrates me even more; the hitbox of your character. I've had so many ball losts because the ball pass right through my strikey sister, it seems that you need to position her directly close to pixel perfect in the center of the ball; if you try to make contact with the ball on the side of the girl (to make it bounce back at angle or just to make a desperate save) it wll pass right through her! Yes, I know that you can make the girl swipe the ball in a wider arc, or even charge up a power attack, but not attacking the ball and instead just headbutting it will make it travel slower, which I appreciate as a tactic when I want to chill with a cute and genki game while I reminiscence about Bust-A-Move. But no, I get served a big can of frustrate-ass instead. :(

There are better games out there, even in this price range.

This is more like a school project than a professionally made game, which is fine in itself. But not something I would recommend you to spend your money or your time on.

You only have to play for a short while to see everything the game has to offer, and there is no real re-play value here either.

One stage/background only; enemy variety is close to none with there being just small non-bosses, bigger non-bosses, bosses, and one final boss, and they all act the same (homing in you); no high score; no new game plus or endless mode; if you continue to play after you have defeated the final boss the game will eventually glitch out more and more (due to the inability to handle it's own resources) until it finally overloads and freezes/crashes; there is one weapon type that is superior to everything else that makes you win everytime; no really interesting mechanics, just the same old basic tropes done in an uninspired way. Also several odd/bad UI and UX designs.

This is a game I would have expected to find on a shovelware collection for C64/Amiga/MSDOS or in appstore for phones/tablets.

1. Somehow alot of stuff that I accumulated in the open beta, either bought or earned, has failed to carry over into the released state of the game.

I am not alone in this, several other players are in the same position, with some having had ALL their progress wiped (including hundreds of dollars worth of purchases like the top tier founder's pack).


2. Also, the characters move alot slower now, and there is a noticeable input lag by several frames. It's a frustrating experience to play when the characters you control move both later and slower than you anticipate. I don't know why they changed it to be this way, but it's bad imho.


3. Still no ranked pvp.


4. You will play against and with bots most (all) of the time, if you play any of the pvp modes. I guess that there are too few actual players available. Out of ten or so pvp matches, I was once paired with human players. Once, as in onte time, out of ten.


5. The single player mode called "Rifts" are fun at first, but soon becomes a grinding slog.


6. Mobile game monetization with multiple currencies for different types of money sinks. Expensive. And close to impossible to grind out the ingame currency needed to buy characters, the earn rate is next to nothing. All of this is a departure for the worse, compared to the open beta.

I copied the text in this review from a post I made in the discussion forum.

So much jank in this game.

Ok, this is really silly and bad.

When I play the card that gives me power equal to the number of cards in my draw pile, I retain that power for the rest of the fight (card costs 5 mana and is consumed.

If I later play the card that gives me +15% power for two turns, ALL of my power is removed after two turns, not just the temporary +15%.

Issues like this are frequent in this game, can't play a round without encountering something that is either incredibly annoying or straight up game breaking.

The art direction for this game is superb, truly unique. But, the game itself, is so obviously unfinished and jankily mashed together. I can't take this anymore, I will take a break from playing this and check back later to see if the game is fixed, as of now it's more like a beta/early access build than a complete and finsihed game.

This game is not done yet, even if it claims to be the 1.0 version.

Whenever I play it, the game will always eventually give me the Vulkan ♥♥♥♥-off and crash. Crash crash crash.

There are also some strange design choices, gameplay wise, like how it is possible to soft-lock yourself; you start the game with a few resources, like granite bricks that are used for several things including the small quarry, and the quarry is the only way that you can get those bricks from so if you build anything else before you build the quarry you are ♥♥♥♥♥♥ and need to start over, same if your quarry is destroyed.
