Is Starfield an overall good game? Unfortunately I think it misses the mark. It's a fun game marred by performance problems, glitches, lackluster writing and the typical Bethesda jank, for example NPCs are weirdly animated and seem to have some seriously creepy dead eyes. However, it is enjoyable. The universe feels like a video-game adaptation of The Expanse and the Martian and it pulls off a fairly decent attempt at world-building.

This is absolutely not a game that people who are not familiar with Bethesda games should play, but Bethesda has shown some good foundations with the game and I imagine with a few solid updates to address bugs and performance it'll be a solid experience.

I might be wrong, but one glaring concern is this game feels like it's missing content, as though they made a whole additional questline and major faction that would have fit in perfectly in the main story line and then cut it so they could add it in later as DLC. (I also have this feeling about several other questlines where loose-ends are never satisfactorily tied up or explained away). It's a game that is a million miles wide but everything is so shallow.

If I was being generous I would say Bethesda has borrowed aspects from their previous games that fans resonated with and implemented in a futuristic sci-fi setting, realistically though they've just gone down a checklist and copy-pasted parts directly into the game.
  1. Boring companions ✔
  2. Uninspired base building ✔
  3. Generic fetch quests ✔
  4. "Random" encounters to extend playtime ✔

Ship combat and customisation is very fun and surprisingly detailed. I can't deny that Bethesda has done a fantastic job with the visual and sound design of the ships and opened the doors for some talented modders to really go wild.

I really have enjoyed my time with this game, but it's nowhere close to Game of the Year. I'd give it a 4/10 at best, possibly 6-6.5/10 if they fix the performance issues and bugs, but even then it seems like they are banking on future DLC. My one take-away from this is I am worried for Elder Scrolls 6 (Whenever that will come out) because if this is the release standard we are getting from Bethesda now I can't say I'm optimistic about the future of their games.

Incredibly fun game with an interesting world. A few game-breaking bugs (dead end missions), but overall quite enjoyable.

It definitely needs some polish, but I can see this being a fairly good game once they iron out the bugs.

Interesting atmosphere but quite a bit of backtracking. Looks brilliant and the sound design is amazing.

I like the concept; an SCP-like organisation that gathers, catalogues, and studies anomalous objects suddenly thrown into a lockdown due to an unknown entity. Combat just doesn't feel as engaging as I would like it to be. Maybe late-game you get to be a telekinetic badass but I find the enemy scaling - even in areas you have already visited at lower levels to be an odd choice to show off the new abilities.

Bosses are okay, but are mostly damage sponges whilst you avoid 1-2 shot kills. Nothing we haven't all seen before.

Having loads of optional collectables that add to the lore of the world in an organic way is a brilliant idea and fits the theme of this game perfectly.

I'm so close to recommending this game, but I just don't enjoy it. I really wish I did because I can only imagine it gets better the further on you get, but I just wasn't hooked.

I do not really like souls-likes. I find them more frustrating than fun.

Where to start with reviewing this?
This game is a 10/10. I have never played a game that has ever needed me to 'git gud' whilst enjoying it enough to do so. Not only is this game unbelievable gorgeous, it has the atmosphere to back it up. The world is packed with secrets and optional bosses that give you just the right amount of difficulty before subtly guiding you to the main story bosses.

The story is engaging and addictive whilst also forcing you to think for yourself. I can understand the complaint that there is little direction in the quests, but you just need to listen to the NPC dialogue and they'll give you enough lore and hints to help you on your way.

The lore in this game is immense. Despite it being an almost overwhelming amount of information and systems being thrown at you I found it completely understandable and left me actively searching for more.

The combat is unforgiving but accurate - button mashing and panic rolling will not save you. This game does not generally do difficult encounters by just upping the damage and HP of enemies, they are (relatively) intelligent opponents that will try to counter your actions and behaviour. Pattern recognition and prediction is your best friend here. You will have moments of frustration and anger at your inability to defeat the enemies, in these moments I finally understood the dark souls mantra "Git Gud". It is not dismissive comment meant to disparage others, it is a quiet acknowledgement of your struggle and a call to be better, to learn and overcome as others have before. Every single challenge is surmountable even if it truly seems unfair.

Some bosses are designed better than others but with over 80 bosses I can't expect all of them to be created equally.

The only problem with this game is I genuinely do not think I will ever enjoy other games in the same way ever again. I can only hope and pray that some day another comes that makes me feel the same

I really like the core concept of this game - survival in a hostile environment whilst scavenging and hunting, and this game takes that core theme that we've all seen a million times (Rust, Minecraft, Stranded Deep, etc) and breaks that trope by putting it into a bitterly cold and barren expanse. That being said, the actual gameplay is tedious and repetitive.

Pros:
> Incredible atmosphere of isolation
> Charming art style that reminds me of telltale games
> Some brilliant examples of storytelling through "show don't tell"

Cons:
> Clunky controls (I feel this works with the environment, but it should be noted as something that may put others off)
> An endless grind largely dependant on loot spawns in the early game (especially on harder difficulties)
> Late game has no real end-point. You can't escape, you can't build your own safehouse - or even move stuff to better utilise the space you do have, and once you have reached self-sufficiency there isn't really any major goals.
> A walking simulator for large portions of the game - both wintermute and survival.

I struggle to dislike this game, I think it is an absolute diamond in the rough, but it has been like this for over 4 years now and whilst it is getting regular updates and the developers are clearly working very hard to turn this into their vision, I have just gotten bored with the gameplay.

I think core tweaks could really change how this game feels, stuff like co-op, slightly faster walking speed, minor furniture rearrangement or some form of survival endpoint would breathe new life into this conceptually smart game.

I do like this game, and if you're interested I'd say to go for it.

If you're hesitant I'd say to wait for a few months until there is more content added.

Borderlands without the humour, destiny without the charm and fallout NV without the consequences or fun.

I completed the game and did almost all side quests (getting the best possible ending). It's a remarkably short game for what it is advertised as. Most of the game boils down to fly here, shoot that, talk to this person, fly somewhere else to do the exact same thing. I don't dislike the game, it has genuine moments that are enjoyable, but everything from the story, to the character development, to the actual gun-play just feels meh.

I got it on sale for 50% off, and even then I think it's a bit of stretch to say it was worth that. It's definitely not worth £50. The thing that annoys me the most about it is that there isn't really any replayability. I can't choose to be a pirate captain, I can't choose to be a religious zealot - you're shoehorned into being the saviour (or inept saviour) of a galaxy.

It is a pretty game, and I think credit where credit is due; I found the town environments quite impressive and immersive at times. But everything is just so 2-dimensional. After having just finished the game I honestly could not give more than 5 characters names, including the BBEG and some of the companions.

I don't think I would actively tell people to avoid this game, but if someone asked me for a list of 10 games to recommend this wouldn't even come close to being on that list.

This game is worth every penny, even considering it is a fairly expensive early access game. While there are major features still missing and the occasional bug to be found, this is my game of the year.

You can build sprawling mega-factories, design efficient assemblies to automate the process and all while exploring a surprisingly detailed and fleshed out open-world aspect.

I cannot properly express how good this game is, and it is very clear that this is a true passion project from the developers. A first person factorio-like game with properly implemented open-world, survival and base building is probably a once in a generation find.

It's grindy in all the right ways without being annoying and don't be afraid to demolish your factory and rebuild to maximise efficiency. I haven't even unlocked everything yet, not even close, but I'm still finding that every new stage is my favourite. Just when I've found the perfect setup, something just clicks and I keep enjoying it more.

There are negatives, as expected of an early access game; I'd personally like a map earlier on in the stages and the performance of large factories could be improved, but it's nothing that can't be implemented later.

Overall I would 1000% recommend this to anyone who enjoys exploration games, base building games, or anyone who just enjoys obliterating an alien planet with the unbridled quest for 100% efficient factories.
