I find myself overlooking a neon-lit river beneath a busy overpass in Night City, a place that perfectly captures the dystopian essence of Cyberpunk 2077. Dominated by megacorporations and hyper-capitalism, this city commodifies everything. The game shines in storytelling, presenting unforgettable characters and dark narratives, like politicians having their minds rewritten and a serial killer seeking redemption. Johnny Silverhand, portrayed by Keanu Reeves, stands out, embodying the rebellious spirit of the game. His sharp dialogue and relentless fight against the system add depth to the experience. Night City is visually striking, blending retrofuturism with sleek corporate aesthetics. Driving through the city, I enjoy the original music and immerse myself in elaborate heists that showcase its unique setting. Despite high standards, the game suffers from typical open-world quirks, like inconsistent reactions to player actions and an odd abundance of dildos scattered throughout the environment. Overall, Cyberpunk 2077 offers a captivating and immersive experience in a richly crafted world. Despite a massive day-zero patch, the game still struggles with bugs like quest progression issues and save-file corruption, though frequent autosaves minimize progress loss. Visual glitches, such as floating objects, are common. A particularly creepy incident involved a dead peddler who could still interact and sell items. The first-person perspective, though great for immersion, can feel stiff and shaky, affecting combat precision and movement. This improves slightly as you adjust and enhance your skills through five broad attributes, each governing multiple perk trees, gradually fixing combat issues and adding strategic depth. The game balances between an open-world experience and an immersive sim, focusing on methodical combat with intelligent enemy AI. High-level perks allow for diverse playstyles, enhancing weapons and hacking abilities for more dynamic encounters. However, elements like looting and dialogue can be underwhelming. Looting is cumbersome, with valuable iconic items quickly outpaced by duplicates. Dialogue options influenced by attributes and backstory often lack depth, limiting meaningful interactions. Despite its flaws, Cyberpunk 2077 reflects our times with its anti-corporate themes and political undertones, making a strong statement about the dangers of unchecked capitalism and the commodification of everything, including the soul. While it may not revolutionize game design, it pushes the medium to engage with significant issues, aiming to leave a lasting impact. The Cyberpunk 2077 2.0 update introduces significant features like a new police system and vehicle combat, enhancing the gameplay experience, especially in Phantom Liberty. Key improvements include a clearer relationship between attributes and perk points, thanks to UI enhancements, making perks easier to understand. The shift to cyberware for armor instead of clothing allows for more freedom in character customization without sacrificing stats. This update expands the variety of builds, encouraging players to revisit the game. Phantom Liberty adds compelling characters, meaningful choices, and a rich new area in Dogtown. Despite some flaws in its branching storyline, it represents a powerful conclusion to one of the finest RPGs on PC, fulfilling CDPR's long-held vision.
