The Ori series sits comfortably in my list of all-time favorites and after the beauty that was “Blind Forest”, I was ecstatic when the sequel “Will of the Wisps” was announced. Following up one of the most beloved 2D Platformers of recent history was not an easy task, but somehow, Moon Studios did the impossible and one-upped themselves.
-
Visually, the game is as beautiful as it gets, expanding on the gorgeous art style of its successor. Flora and fauna are even more detailed, backdrops and horizons are jaw-dropping, character design is unique and the animations are buttery-smooth. Literally every frame of “Will of the Wisps” is wallpaper worthy and the superb contrast of colors make it one of the most visually stunning games ever.
-
From a game design standpoint, “Will of the Wisps” improved upon the strengths of the first installment, while also ironing out the few issues it had. The combat system is as varied and playful as the platforming, with a ton of abilities and power-ups that complement the fast paced, airborne movement systems. Stringing together abilities and techniques to move through the unique and differentiated biomes, each introducing new mechanics and enemies, is some of the best platforming there is. Another big step up from “Blind Forest” are the added boss encounters. While following a similar formula, they look and play different enough and serve as the triumphant finale of each area.
-
Speaking of bosses and platforming, don’t mistake “Will of the Wisps” for an easy game. While its quieter moments won’t make you sweat profusely, there are passages and encounters that will make you squirm, scream and shake your head. It is worth the pain though, as the moment you master a tricky section, the adrenaline and dopamine gates burst open.
-
Bittersweet and touching, the game’s story should even move a heart of stone. Gareth Coker’s music makes me want to burst into tears and defines the game’s character and emotions, truly a masterpiece of a soundtrack and worthy of an own exposé. I’d love to keep going, but to keep it simple, “Will of the Wisps” is a crowning achievement of modern gaming and I urge you to experience it.
