Core gameplay seems to draw from https://steamproxy.net/steamstore/app/1184820/Poker_Quest_Swords_and_Spades/ which I found quite entertaining.
Zoeti has a different art style and progression mechanisms, and my impression so far (just 2.3h played) is it may also be easier and have less content/replayability than PQ. Since Zoeti is made in Unity, it has much better support for a handheld like the Steam Deck or playing with a gamepad, although this is the kind of game one plays with a mouse otherwise.

I found some glitches in the skills UI (seems like when selecting the skills the UI state is not in sync with the skills state or something similar) and there are some typos currently in weird places (like the protagonist name, "Valetina", which reads "Valentina" in the trailer) which shows some lack of polish/testing or probably rushing for release, which is probably bad news for a game released more than one year ago.

As far as I've played the story and characters are also not very engaging, but this being a roguelike the main reason to play would normally be the gameplay loop.

All in all I think the impression is positive since it scratches the itch it's meant to scratch, but I would definitely not pick this up without a steep discount.

Visually appealing, but severely harmed by unpolished and dull gameplay.

The game looks good, graphics are simple but the style is fitting. The effects of the cards/units are also good, so all in all it is visually very appealing.
The gameplay however, is heavily reliant on having an initial hand that contains the right cards, unless you are vastly overpowered, which makes the gameplay go from somewhat difficult to very dull too quickly after you grinded enough.

Still, the fact that the initial hand decides each battle, coupled with that there is no way to mulligan that initial hand, and that losing a battle makes you lose all progress on a map, but specially, any changes you made to your decks or equipped objects during the whole map, makes the experience feel poor throughout the whole game.
This is specially damning when, due to the mechanics of a certain map, battles are mostly done as puzzles rather than tactics, and you need to try changing the deck during exploration. Failure to figure out the right way to beat the puzzle rewards the player with all the previous drawbacks plus an unskippable animation.
At this point any trace of fun gets lost in the chores of waiting and redoing changes you have already made before, damning the experience definitely.

Update:
As noted by the developer, I would like to amend something in this review: I stated wrongly that the player cannot mulligan, but it is possible. When writing this I was thinking of a situation that I have come across a few times while playing, when you may end up with a hand where you cannot play any cards, but you can't either discard/remove any of them either, and that got mixed up in my writing.
I stand corrected, thanks for taking the time to read the review and noting this :).

Fun and challenging both in single player or with friends, especially the latter.
That kind of game where several messes in a row can trigger either non-stop laughter or killer instincts among your buddies.

Yooka-Layle is one of those console-style platformers that are not so common in PC, with neat graphics that can stand well the test of time, some well-thought dialogues (mixed with really bad puns) and nice puzzles, which most of the time are fairly easy.
The experience is however ruined many times by the fact that, anytime you find something actually challenging/fun, you know you will unavoidably have to skip through animations/transitions/cutscenes which are going to put you completely off the game flow, break your engagement and make the whole game a pain to follow through without adding anything positive to the experience.
The fact that actually saving your game, returning to the main menu and restarting from your last spawn point is faster than getting out of some situations (like falling in unexpected places or goos, where you may need to wait to get hit once and again until your character is finally killed off) takes another big chunk off the joy of exploring the game world.
I would give this game a mixed rating if there was one, but if I had been aware of the previous points I would probably have started playing something else instead this, so, it's a no from me.

As a shooter it´s meh and there are plenty of more modern/better choices.
I agree the narrative should be rated better but watching it in a streaming platform is an alternative that avoids the shooting part without missing basically nothing, so... thumbs down.

Previously very very challenging, but with the added difficulty level choice it can cater to a much wider audience. Looking forward to give it another (more relaxed) try.

A game that doesn´t age, just like the tons of toxic players in it.Update: Well, it did not age until Epic took over.Guess this is another point to add to 2020´s Catastrophe Highlights.

So far, this is the game that has made me feel closest to what I would expect of a Chrono Trigger, Secret of Evermore or Illusion of Time equivalent of the current time.

Kudos for the team that is behind this :D .
