In classic government fashion, the U.S. ended up with mountains of unwanted cheese in the ’80s after oversubsidizing dairy farmers. Instead of, say, not making mountains of cheese, they stockpiled it in giant warehouses “for emergencies.” Eventually, they offloaded it onto low-income families, spawning the infamous “government cheese”—a salty orange brick of bureaucratic leftovers for the people.
