One of my favorite games of all time. I wasn't alive when this came out but can see how this specific game can change an entire genre.

The atmosphere is what got me when I first played and is still a large component as to why I am still playing. The world is dark and gloomy, a world like that of the dark ages stirred thoroughly in a time of industrial revolution and mixed with more than a hint of magic; it's a very unique world. The game is not a horror game but, whether or not the developers intended, it has horror elements and can be very creepy at many different times. The game has a thrill to it, and the elements that make up the game support that feel.

The game has an interesting story with fantastic voice actors, especially the main character, Garrett's, voice actor. Garrett starts as a freelance thief and over the course of each mission, he gets in deeper with bigger people. The story evolves and I believe is very well told, as in the story itself is told very effortlessly in each cutscene before each mission.

Each mission starts with an item screen where the loot you collect in the previous level, or a selected amount if you just start, can be used to purchase items helpful to your mission. The items you can get may be different types of arrows that help you in different types of ways. For example, a moss arrow will soften the floor into moss allowing you to traverse it with no sound so no one nearby can hear you. Or the water arrow which you can use to extinguish torches and candles so that you have the upper advantage in sneaking through the shadows. Or even the rope arrow, an arrow that can only attach to wood surfaces and when it does it drops a rope down to the floor directly underneath it. The rope arrow is needed to reach certain areas in which Garrett can't access alone.

The stealth is (obviously) the main focus to this game with interaction with guards (etc.) taking a back seat. The game uses a smart detection system and a small section on the bottom of the screen to tell whether or not you are being seen in any way and if you are hiding well in the shadows. It's bright when you are easily noticed and near black when completely hidden with shades in between to indicate your current stealth condition.

The maps are grand especially considering the age of the game. Each map is unique and each objective within each mission is a joy to experience. Putting the game in expert allows for more objectives within each mission and will have you scouring throughout the entire map to complete them. The maps being huge don't feel empty in any way (unless you knock out/kill guards). Expert adds the challenge of never being able to kill anyone which makes this game a real treat because you have to figure out ways to maneuver around the people you're trying to avoid.

I recommend using at least two save games to save simultaneously just in case you save in a spot that leaves you for dead every time you load it. It will save you a lot of time and headache. I definitely recommend the Thief Gold HD Texture Mod as well, it updates the game in a beautiful way. Though the game's original textures may be dated, I still think the game looks nice despite that, but how you play is all dependent on how you are as a gamer.

The game is very much worth the low price and if you can find it even cheaper then it's even more worth it.
I hope you enjoy it as much as I am.

It wouldnt be my first choice for a jrpg but that doesnt make it bad. I do enjoy the story and characters a lot and that outshines the gameplay in my opinion. The gameplay, yes, is still fun but is not the crowning jewel of this game. The story and comedy within is one great reason to play it.

I do enjoy the half-gameplay, half-anime style though, and it is a perfect game to sit and relax to, I still have to play more and will update the review once I complete it because by then I may feel really differently.

GET THIS GAME NOW, I DEMAND YOU!! Oh, and be sure to play this game BEFORE you play Portal 2, although you CAN play Portal 2 without playing Portal and still understand the storyline, but the storyline is more understandable when you play Portal BEFORE playing Portal 2. If you understood that...
