One of the best souls-like games I played in past years. The game "clicked" with me about nearly all aspects of it, sadly, excluding few major one. I'll write more about downsides to point them out because I think it is more important for people who may consider buying this game. Level design was simple awesome. Interconnection was on Dark Souls level, opening new doior from other side felt very satisfying and rewarding especially on later stages of the game, where enemies are really tough and you cant just face-roll them without second thought. Armor, weapon and spell design is also top notch, but there are a few problems what I will discuss later. Performance. I do not have 5000$ setup and yet had no problems with performance on day 1. Did not use upscalling, but making some settings lower did not hurt me and it never droped under 60fps. Hidden item info unless you have right stat high enough - good idea and helped to hide some lore-related stuff. And yes, it is good and added some mystery.
Now about bad stuff..:
  • Some boss fights are really gimicky. Few times I was really disapointed after watching the cutscene, enjoying enemy design and expecting an awesome fight, but it was just an "arcade-like" run around and hit random adds while boss throw projectiles at me (another boss just talks instead) disapointment.
  • Bosses that have long invulnerability phases. It flies up (or jump on a horse (eddit: turns out you can take him off the horse without waiting)) and you already know that next ~2min you wont have any fun and will just dodge easy repeatable attacks. It adds nothing to the fight (especially horse-boss), but annoyance and as I found out later its a main theme of all my complains - making mechanic tedious and annoying, while developer tries to make it hard
  • I can see how some people can despise combat mechanics in this game. It's hard to explain, it just feels lacking. Most likely you will end up using only one type of attack (especially on bosses). Every weapon outside of it's moveset feels the same.
  • Developers address user complains way too straight. Pick-up (souls) animation was way too long what made some people give up on picking them up during boss fight. Why they are inside boss arena in the first place? Making pick up animation just a bit faster and spaw souls before fog.. This would fix the problem and not take the initial mechanic. But well, this one isnt real complain for now. It just makes me a bit worried about future of this game if such blunt changes continue. (eddit: so far, lately dev team mentions their own vision of the game in change logs and make compromises to make players satisfied and the game concept would stay undamaged)
  • At some point it's hard to see new armor\weapon\items what you picked up. You cant put items in a box (or I didnt find a way to do so), and as a result your inventory is cluttered. Maybe adding exclamation mark on top of new unique (items what you did not find before) items would make this problem less noticeable (as in remnant 2 for example). All icon designs are looking pretty similar. Evferything is pretty but looks as a mess in inventory. Maybe playing around with colored details on icons would help items to stand out? "sticker book"? To see what is collected and what isnt? These all are just crutches, but may help. I did not check 70% armor and I am scared to do so with inventory as it is right now. Its 10 times worse with rings.
  • (FIXED. You can restart game on normal NG now with all checkpoints, some dissapear on NG+, more dissapear on NG++ and only two main one stay on NG+++) And now the biggest one for me. NG+ has no pre-set points. It reminded me Dark Souls II no bonfire challenge, but there it was your choice to do. Here... you're forced to do it. Most people go on NG+ to collect armor what they missed (I personally try to collect all items on one save in games what I really love), to see NPC quest lines. Yes, this makes some shortcuts even more valuable, but I do not know.. This change in NG+ made me off interent, quit the game, and on interent again, just to force steam load my save file from the cloud. Maybe a choice to reset world on NG0 with bonfires would be a good solution, and keep NG+1 for such experience? If not - at least make sure people know that this change exist in NG+. its really major change and its a very unpleasant surprise.
