Very promising tanker sim set in the Fulda Gap during a "cold war gone hot" scenario in the mid-1980's. Despite being a "lite" sim, there is an impressive attention to detail, especially in gunner optics modeling and rangefinding. Despite the added complexity over "tank shooters," most everything is operated by just a couple keystrokes and mouse inputs... it's very intuitive once you read up on how the systems work.

Due to systems modeling and differences in tanks and APCs that are drivable, this is where GHPC makes its direct "Live Service Game" competition look bad. In short, it has complexity, while maintaining accessibility. The developers also respect the fact that not all players want to deal with an incredibly slow (some may call it... a snail's paced) grind for equipment they want to use, nor do they want to spend exorbitant sums on "Special" vehicles which "may or may not" provide an advantage.

Audio as a whole is excellent and immersive... check out gameplay videos for examples of how crew voices change depending on situations. Despite being in a good state at the moment, the devs are still adding more layers to the sound design, it's just going to get better... and more PTSD inducing (in the best possible way.)

Damage modeling is excellent and complex... and the after action report showing where hits and shrapnel/spalling impacted really shows this off. While the damage/destruction system is great from a technical standpoint, from a visual effects standpoint it is currently limited, but many additions are on the roadmap for improvement. This to include impact decaling, structural damage visuals, and vegetation destruction.

Multiplayer is not currently available, but is in development for full release up to and including multi-crew Coop.

For now, the game offers instant action missions which are pretty much as it sounds. The dynamic campaign mode is still in development and has many features still to be implemented, yet is fun in its current state.

"Soon™," we'll have the opportunity to fight alongside, and against, infantry... which will drastically change how the game is played. In addition, the Soviets and Bundeswehr are in development, and will be playable.

It's been in early access for about a year now, and has expanded and improved greatly in that time. The developers are also gamers who want to have a fun product, and they have it here in spades.

TLDR; If you're looking for SimLite™ tank action without a grind, it's very, very good even in it's early access state and well worth the price.

The positives:

*Pretty vast character creation with tons of options

*Compelling story so far in a huge, sprawling world... and I cannot stress enough that choices DO matter, and there will be consequences that will alter the plot in meaningful ways. Be very, VERY careful with your choices... or play "fast and loose" and just roll with whatever may happen. Beyond this, I can say no more to avoid spoiling.

*Lots of options in dealing with situations... including the "nuclear option" to wipe everyone out

*Excellent gameplay with loads of depth

*Great audio and voice acting

*Great graphics (that are actually well-optimized... shocking for a modern game's initial release, I know)

The negatives:

*D&D 5e Rules are a bit lameduck

*A few annoying bugs here and there... but not many, and less than expected for such a massive game

*No automated auto-sort function for inventory. (Must be done manually... any/every time there's a change in inventory)

*Character creation presents some very... unnecessary... options. Some of which can really be a detriment to immersion and encourage creating "joke" characters that will likely be common in multi-player (prepare yourself for Pink haired, Pigtailed, hermaphroditic Half-Orc Bards).

*Romance options for the characters is either broken or not well thought out. It feels tacked on at the last minute and very underdeveloped. Party members who barely know you and certainly don't trust you will give you their life story too readily. In addition, the vast majority of the characters, regardless of how they approve of you, will "hit on" you constantly like hormonal teenagers. There is no option for friendship, there is only "We'll bang, OK?" or "Get the hells away from me." There is no nuance or complexity, which is a big shame considering how very well done the rest of the game is.

Overall, despite a few minor annoyances, it's an excellent game that puts other AAA games to shame... and well worth the release delays and extra time in development.

EDIT on 8-16-23 to reflect further experience with the story

Has continued on a downhill trajectory since the Team17 takeover. That trajectory seems to be steepening...

From long-standing hitbox/hit registration/damage registration issues, to movement speeds, to inconsistent animations, to performance drops, the game seems to introduce new problems with every patch, in addition to failing to address legacy issues.

It's really a shame, as the game used to be great fun. However, the sheer amount of bugs/issues kills the experience at least for me, and I have zero confidence in Team17 to address the problems to actually improve the gameplay.

On the bright side, I now have free SSD storage space!

Scummy business practices and bloat have killed another previously fun game. And Gaijin's reply to community backlash reeks of "We're Sorry" as portrayed by South Park.

Really well done survival Co-Op experience that even works well in single-player with bots. The developers behind Barotrauma started out making a spiritual successor to "Space Station 13." They ended up with much more. They leaned into oceanic horror elements... in space... in the oceans below the ice crust of Jupiter's moon of Europa. The developers have also mentioned that Frictional Games' "Soma" was a big source of inspiration for Barotrauma. The result is quite an experience.

The game is light on story elements, but what there is for story unveils itself pretty naturally as you progress and dive deeper. The random mission (or quest) structure generally involves transporting people/cargo, mining, retrieving objects (Ye Olde Fetch Quests), hunting the wildlife, or hunting outlaws. On the surface this looks pretty limited. But beware... it's not quite so simple, as once you drop into the procedurally generated world, anything can happen. You could get a "blue milk run" that has little to no action and is just easy money. Then... you could stumble into terrifying situations that you and your crew barely survive. Playing with bots on even normal difficulty presents a challenge at times, not because the AI is bad, but because there are things lurking in the deep that will challenge even seasoned crews.

Speaking of crews, each member of the sub is important, and will help in vital roles. The sub itself is both the object that keeps you alive, and tries to kill you... that's where the crew's roles come in to play. Whether that be Security, Engineer/Electricians, Mechanics, Doctors, and of course the leader being the Captain. Engineers keep the nuclear reactor purring and maintain electrical equipment. Mechanics maintain equipment, Doc maintains the crew's health and can perform CPR to potentially revive crew that have gone into cardiac arrest. The Captain makes sure everything is coordinated and running smoothly, as well as filling in gaps in coverage when necessary. There is also the role of "Assistant" which is basically a "red-shirt" from the original Star Trek. If specialist crew are killed, it will typically have a negative effect. Not so with assistants, though there are certainly other good reasons for hiring them as they can provide... some unique... services.

It's a very unique, fun (and at times terrifying) experience, and I hope that people won't be turned off strictly by its classic side-scrolling nature.

TLDR: Fun with friends, side-scrolling adventure and submarine management, thalassophobia exposure therapy game.

It had a rocky initial release on that other online game store (Thanks for beta testing!), but after the plethora of bugs were squashed and MW5 finally came to steam after a year, the Battletech/Mechwarrior fans have a decent singleplayer offering in the franchise. The gameplay is good, splitting the difference between Mechwarrior 2: Mercenaries and Mechwarrior 3. Mech movements and weapon systems feel sufficiently "weighty" and combat can be very intense. Missions can be a mixed bag, some being blue milk runs that seem to be a bit of a waste of time and not terribly interesting (But hey, easy money!), others being so difficult that you barely make it out alive with your mech intact. The missions can seem a bit repetitive at times, but there is enough unpredictability to surprise you. Don't get complacent, especially on a high-difficulty mission... the game can, and often will, punish you for it.

Now the not-so-great. AI. The AI does some things that are just silly... however, there is a mod to fix 99% of this. TTRulez_AIMod2 on NexusMods overhauls the AI to such a significant extent that often I will forget I'm fighting AI. (Note that as of the Rise of Rasalhague update to the core game, the AI mod is broken and, according to its developer, should be updated and released most likely be the end of February)

It's fun in its stock form, but if you really want to experience the Mechwarrior franchise as it should be, download mods. Particularly VonBiomes, Yet Another Mechlab, Yet Another Mechlab Mechs, and Yet Another Weapon here on Steam, as well as Coyotes Mission Mod and Nostalgic Sounds Redux on NexusMods. That's just to name a few, there are plenty more that make great additions.

TL;DR:
I am a long-time Mechwarrior, having started playing as a filthy freebirth Clanner in Mechwarrior 2: 31st Century Combat. I have played every Mechwarrior title since (Not MechAssault... screw Microsoft and that dumbed-down arcade crap). While I don't think Mechwarrior 5 is the best title in the franchise, it is certainly a solid offering that scratches the itch.

Great naval warfare RTS that rewards planning and improvisation. Why call it a "Naval Warfare RTS" instead of a space RTS such as "Homeworld"? Well, put simply, it doesn't play like a space RTS with the exception of 3D movement. It is smaller scale than Homeworld, and ship/system management in addition to task force command is equally important. This is a more focused approach, and feels more like '80s era warships on the sea moving around rather than spacecraft capable of travelling at thousands of kilometers an hour.

Some have compared Nebulous to the Sci-Fi series "The Expanse." While there is some merit to the comparison, in all honesty it is potentially a bit misleading in terms of the combat itself. If it were "The Expanse," then Newtonian physics would be in full effect, which would completely change how the game is played... for better or worse (See "Children of a Dead Earth" for realistic Newtonian space combat). It even slightly reminds me of Mechwarrior... no joke, I spend more time in the Fleet and Missile builders (Reminiscent of the Mechlab) than playing matches... the possibilities for different strategies and playstyles are staggering. Oh and by the way, the AI opponents aren't terrible, can be fun to play against, and can most definitely pummel you if you make mistakes.

As far as combat, it is very slow-paced, as ships are slow to traverse and maneuver. In the opening few minutes of a match, ships are positioned to strike in a very chess-like manner. While the pace is initially slow, when combat starts there is a great deal of things going on that need to be managed. Such as setting firing orders for cannons, creating firing solutions and/or waypointing for missiles, controlling guidance RADAR, controlling electronic warfare suites, maneuvering line and scout ships into different positions, you can even micro point defense systems target priority if you want, etc. There's a lot that happens with a fleet costing 3000 points which is the standard. But if you want more craziness, that number can be increased to the point of the game becoming a micromanagement nightmare.

To me this is the only potential negative to the game. Nebulous is a strange combo of slow pace, which suddenly becomes fast-paced to the point that mistakes WILL constantly be made due to unexpected "Oh Crap!" moments, and the level of micromanagement resulting in task saturation.

The game is still in development, and I know that many aspects are being improved. In its current state, even with some flaws, it is well worth the price. Especially to support the developers. They all work day jobs and work on Nebulous in their free time, and the project lead is an active duty Naval Officer. Despite the game development coming in second to their jobs, they are still cranking out big improvements to the game at a good pace. This is a passion project, and it shows.

Used to be a great "Sim-Lite" shooter which was presented in a relatively serious manner. Used to be. Now it has lessened the sim shooter elements and the gritty, serious presentation... in favor of goofy cosmetic purchases and more emphasis on the arcade aspects than the "Sim-Lite" origins that made it great in the first place. Ah well, nothing good ever lasts forever.

A well crafted single-player story driven Star Wars game that I am surprised ever saw the light of day with Electronic Arts publishing. Its core gameplay elements are very similar to Tomb Raider and Dark Souls with a heavy amount of Star Wars makeup.

But... how does that work? Do Dark Souls "Bonfire" mechanics (Health/Force replenishment with respawning of all enemies) actually "work" within a Star Wars narrative? At first, I thought it wouldn't... but then I re-watched the Rebels animated show. I realized that it actually works very well when you consider the "World Between Worlds" that the protagonist, Cal Kestis, visits every time he meditates. To avoid spoiling the show and it's implications to the Star Wars universe, I won't elaborate on that further.

The combat and puzzles feel rather Dark Souls and Tomb Raider "Lite" which is slightly disappointing, but not so much that it detracts from the overall experience. The story is VERY good, and begins after the purge of the Jedi and rise of the Empire, following Cal's journey from a Shipbreaker with a secret past, to a Jedi Knight.

Overall, it's a bloody good Star Wars game, with surprisingly well rounded mechanics that is certainly worth the play-through.

Brilliant survival Coop. Joining up with friends is quick and easy, and the core game loop is just fun. Even something seemingly tedious like chopping down trees can be interesting... with many vikings losing their lives to fully physics-enabled trees smashing them to a pulp as they fell. The grind for some materials can get a bit tedious at times (Looking at you, Copper), but overall it doesn't feel nearly as bad as other games in the genre.

The difficulty is great, sometimes being easy, but often times fooling the player into a false sense of confidence... which usually results in that mining expedition you planned so hard for... turning into a recovery operation to recover your equipment and loot after your untimely death.

The combat is somewhat basic, but fun... don't expect Bannerlord, but don't expect complete simplicity either, it's a good balance. Most weapons have a secondary function that provides a situational advantage, and some weapons have unique effects that further expand your options to defend yourself and your friends against the hordes of enemies you will inevitably slaughter in a playthrough.

If I have a criticism, it is that the game feels very lonely if playing in single player, and unless you have a few friends that play Valheim, you won't see any other Vikings in game in the form of NPCs. You'll come across abandoned houses and even whole villages... but never another Viking. I would love to see an occasional friendly NPC Viking, struggling to survive in Valheim against the plethora of hostiles the game offers.

The hidden gem in this title is, in my opinion, the building. You can build some stunning structures... basically anything you want... though it will cost you a lot of lumber and stone to accomplish something truly spectacular.

Finally, the devs are very active in the game's development, and the small team that started the project is being expanded due to the staggering sales they have enjoyed. This seems to be a labor of love to them, and I look forward to seeing what they add throughout early access. Wonderful game, gents, love it so far!

Skål!
