Located close to the polished sucker rod near the upper end of the pump barrel, the traveling valve facilitates the entry of fluid from the production tubing or casing into the pump barrel during the upstroke of the pump plunger. This valve regulates the inflow of fluid, ensuring uninterrupted operation and the lifting of fluid from the well.

The standing valve, located near the base of the pump barrel just above the plunger, serves a vital role in preventing fluid from flowing back into the wellbore during the downstroke of the pump plunger. Its primary function is to ensure that fluid is lifted rather than lost into the formation. Typically comprising a valve seat and ball, this valve closes during the downstroke, preventing reverse flow due to pressure exerted by the fluid above it. Conversely, during the upstroke, as pressure below the valve decreases, it opens, enabling fluid to enter the pump barrel from the formation.
