Nuclear fission is the process of splitting larger atoms that releases energy. As opposed to nuclear fusion, which is the process of joining lighter atoms into heavier atoms. The reason we must know this is because both processes are varying ways of how more "sustainable" energy can be produced. Nuclear fission is known to release radioactive nuclear waste (a popular example being Chernobyl.) Nuclear fission, however, is much easier to control and research is still being done on how to achieve harnessing nuclear fusion.
