This software, although difficult to learn, is great for 3D modeling and rendering! If you ever feel too limited by simpler free 3D-rendering software such as SFM, do give Blender a try. Of course, you can even use it to make your own 3D models for games and mods. I've managed to get some TF2 hats (custom-made by myself just to mess around, they're nothing impressive) fully working in TF2, GMod, and SFM by using the community-made Blender Source Tools addon and watching tutorials on YouTube.

I have seen that 2D hand-drawn animations can be made with Blender as well, but I've never gotten into that. Just thought I should mention the 2D part for anyone interested.
