Nutcracker Sabre = Some nice effects when slashing and has good swing speed, however the best aspect of this weapon (And really, the entire bundle) is that it has an INCREASED chance to dismember enemies. (Great for Bounties!)

Nutcracker Outfit = Too Goofy for me

Nutcracker Paraglider = Please note that a paraglider skin can ONLY be viewed by coop players, as DL2 is a FIRST PERSON game.

Overall DLC Rating: 3/10
NOT worth it

Dying Laugh Bat = Bland, It does make a goofy noise upon hitting an enemy, but it gets annoying very quickly.

Dying Laugh Outfit = Weird creepy clown costume that only makes sense to wear around Halloween. (Unless you are obsessed with creepy Clowns I guess?)

Dying Laugh Paraglider = A Paraglider skin that can ONLY be viewed by coop players, as DL2 is a FIRST PERSON game.

- Are the weapons any good?
Not really, unless you are in the early game.
Since the release of this bundle (Over a decade ago!), much better weapons have been added to the game for FREE.
I like the names of the melee weapons, but in terms of viability, I would NOT recommend.

- What do I think of the outfits?
The Specs Ops one looks amazing, but the other ones simply dont belong in a place like Harran. If you want realism, the Spec Ops outfit is your best choice here.

Overall rating: 2/10
Outdated Weapons combined with Generic Outfits, if this wasnt bundled with other DL1 Content, then I would have never bought this!

Check out my other DL1 Reviews for the DLC bundles that I actually DO recommend.

Summary:
A beloved classic FPS, now looking better than ever and with a brand new episode. For me, the best aspects about this particular remaster (As there have already been several!) is the new episode, Dev commentary and the addition of Steam workshop. These three additions contribute massively to the overall value of this product.

Pro’s:
  • There is a total of 5 Episodes, with a massive total number of E1 = 5(2) + E2 = 9(2) + E3 = 9(2) + E4 = 10(1) + E5 =7(1) = 40 Regular Levels and 8 Secret Levels! I would estimate that all of this would give the player at least 25 hours worth of gameplay, assuming they are looking for secrets and generally appreciating the level design.
  • There are a total of 11 unique Weapons! (12 if you count the Flamethrower present ONLY in Episode 5) More specifically: 9 Guns, 1 Mine, 1 Grenade/C4/Pipe bomb and 1 Melee (Duke's mighty Kick)
My personal favourite is the "Freezethrower", it temporarily freezes enemies into rigid breakable blocks!
  • Steam Workshop support! Nuff said
  • Developer Commentary is present in select levels to give the player some trivia, insight, stories and struggles about specific areas/stages. It was so interesting to play through a level while listening to the Developers themselves. There are a total of 206 snippets of Dev commentary to find and activate throughout all 5 Episodes (According to the wiki page)!
  • You can shrink (most) non-boss enemies and then step on them, squishing them into a red paste!
  • New 8 Level Episode 5 titled "Alien World Order". It contains large levels with enemy counts commonly above 100! It also introduces the Incinerator (A kickass flamethrower!) to burn those Alien B*stards.
Con’s:
  • No Expansion packs!? (They were present in the previous release of Duke 3D, Megaton edition[dukenukem.fandom.com]. I would love to know why these were missing!)
  • Opening doors with keycards is very inconsistent and often doesn't register the input!
  • Cant bind actions to Mouse 4 or Mouse 5. Frustrating!
  • Cant delete saves while ingame, can only overwrite them. Kind of weird but luckily, easy to workaround.
  • Rewind mechanic is a great feature, however it can sometimes bug out and annoyingly bring you to the rewind screen when you havent died! This happened to me 3 different times during my playthrough. Thankfully it isnt game breaking, just time wasting.
  • Having to be reminded of Randy Pitchford's greasy existence.

Overall Rating: 8/10
I would sum up the game with the following:
A perfectly paced first Act, a repetitive and challenging second Act and a dreadful bloated final Act.
(Thankfully sweetened with a somewhat satisfying Boss Battle)

Pro’s:
  • The visuals (Especially Xen) are fantastic and are one of the main reasons that this remake is so widely cherished in my opinion. The lighting, models and skyboxes were almost always a "treat" on my eyes.
  • The absolute stunning variety of environments/interiors/locations that you will traverse throughout the game. Notable locations include: Nuclear launch sites, Alien Autopsy Labs, Toxic waste sewer tunnels, Military bunkers, Booby-trapped warehouses, Destroyed Hangars and that isn't even mentioning the sheer beauty, wonder and mystery of the vibrant Alien Borderworld known as "Xen".
  • The first 4 or 5 chapters are easily the best and most immersive part of the game itself. The pacing is noticeably superior in the early game, which is quite a double edged sword.
  • Workshop support, need I say more?
  • The final Boss battle feels epic and tense! The grand scale combined with the high stakes of the encounter produce an exhilarating battle with the (literal) evil mastermind you have been itching to face off against for most of the late game chapters (Lambda core onwards). Despite a few cheap attacks that I found extremely difficult to dodge in time, I enjoyed this battle very much. I couldn't imagine fighting the boss on hard difficulty!

Con’s:
  • The Companion Ai is awful and will almost always lose when fighting with enemies. (Apart from the Headcrabs, Snarks or barnacles) When given the option, I would tell the BM Guards (and Scientists) to hang back and wait for me to finish a gunfight. It just felt like babysitting most of the time!
  • Stealth is awful and the few forced stealth sections that you have to go through feel janky and unfair. The game doesn't feature proper stealth mechanics anyway so i really dont know why they felt the need to try Stealth gameplay at all.
  • No Grenade impact sound or any form of indication that an enemy grenade has been thrown near you.
  • Climbing ladders is janky garbage. It is the exact same crap that Half Life 2 had. You will stick to ladders far more than you want to.
  • Minor critique, The Headcrab attack cooldown is far too short.
  • The MP5K is extremely underpowered and its recoil + spread do anything but help. I do get that this is semi-realistic, but it is honestly useless at any range further than 4 metres, I found myself using the Shotgun far more than the weak SMG. (At least its secondary fire, the Grenade launcher attachment is excellent!)
  • The Hivehand (A wearable alive homing projectile launcher) and Snarks (Deployable small fodder enemies that seek out Humans to hurt) are not very effective at all, The Hivehand has pathetic damage and the Snarks are destroyed very easily by the AI (Especially Vortigaunts) and also can betray their "master" and attack you! I love the idea of using Alien weaponry/organisms to your advantage, especially since they look very unique, but the execution is pretty pathetic.
  • Xen, Gonarch AND the Interloper chapters are blatantly bloated. They go on for far too long with repetitive puzzles and extensive platforming. The "Xen" and "Interloper" chapters in particular seem to have an overwhelming Prescence of 70% puzzles/platforming to 30% Combat. By the midpoint of Interloper I was begging to just face the boss, as I didn't want to sour my experience with the game.
  • Surface Tension is one of the most frustrating chapters in the game. I would would summarise as a combat section after combat section against the SAME F*CKING ENEMIES with the SAME WEAPONS and the SAME LOUSY AI. It is also an hour longer than it should have been. I really don't mind the combat in this game, but there is only so much that you can do to shake things up with the same enemies and weapons!
    Quality > Quantity!
  • The 3 incredibly absurd achievements relating to an ugly purple hat, a random pizza box and a gas canister! (You must take either of the first two items mentioned to the FINAL portal at the end of the game!) I believe that whomever designed these achievements should quite literally NEVER work on a video-game again...

Doom 1+2 Review

Gameplay
☐ Hands couldn't stay away from the mouse & keyboard
☐ Better than I had expected
☑ Average (It is an fps from 1993, as a result, it wont blow your socks off now. However, paying homage to an important title like Doom feels like an obligation if you seriously care about the fps genre!)
☐ Underwhelming

Music
☑ Fantastic sounds and/ or tracks

PC Required

☑ A fair challenge/ Satisfyingly balanced (Play on UV and hunt for secrets to enjoy the best experience.)
☐ Difficult
☐ RIP Keyboard and mouse

Appropriate Pricing
☐ N/A
☐ Worth the full price!
☑ Wait for a sale (I feel like $8USD or lower is fair, seeing as the game is quite old and extremely easy to pirate.)
☐ Don't waste your hard earned cash!

Bugs
☑ Very polished! (During my 270+ hours playing this game on PC AND PS5, I encountered ZERO detrimental bugs))
☐ Minor bugs, tolerable
☐ Bugs hinder immersion and overall enjoyment

Overall Rating: 8/10

Pro’s:
  • At least 30 hours worth of content in the form of:
DOOM I, DOOM II, TNT: Evilution, The Plutonia Experiment, Master Levels for DOOM II, No Rest for the Living, Sigil I, Sigil II and Legacy of Rust.
  • An old school Doom game FINALLY has achievements on the PC! (Though they could have added literally hundreds more achievements in my opinion)
  • Online, Cross-platform, Deathmatch and Co-op support!
  • You can choose between the original "Midi" DOOM and DOOM II soundtracks or the modern IDKFA versions by the GOAT Andrew Hulshult (DUSK, AMID EVIL, Doom Eternal: The Ancient Gods).
  • The gameplay still holds up pretty well today, as long as you know what to expect. Looking around for coloured keys/skulls can get quite frustrating but in general, the exploration and uncovering rewarding secret areas will never lose its satisfying charm.
  • The "Legacy of Rust" Mission Pack introduces 6 brand new enemies and 2 new guns that use Fuel instead of standard ammunition. (Only one of these guns is actually worth using however)
  • Includes an "ID Vault" much like Quake 1 and 2 that shows off (Rarely seen) behind the scenes content such as sprites, Textures, unused promotional art and designs. It is a welcome treat for fans that want to pull back the curtain on these iconic games!
Con’s:
  • Unfortuntely, this is NOT the best way to play and enjoy Classic Doom. I highly recommend GzDoom[zdoom.org] for the most customisable experience and of course...Mod support!
  • The "Wolfenstein" and "Grosse" Secret levels in Doom 2 have been censored to sh*t and as a result, the actual reference to Wolfenstein 3D (An FPS game about shooting Nazis) has become a bit of a joke. To be specific, all of the Swastikas have been removed and the Paintings of Hitler that you can find through the levels have had their Mustache and armband insignias removed completely. What does censoring all of this actually achieve anyway?? This is one of the big reasons (At least for me) why Source ports will ALWAYS be superior to these retail editions that lack mod support and are prone to censorship and copyright crap.
  • It is a nitpick, but 33 Achievements is not nearly as many as I would have liked to see in this official release. I would love to have had at least 100 achievements to provide challenges long after I had finished the missions!
    Some ideas would be:
    - Speedrunning times/scores
    - Beating a level with only fists
    - Finding all secrets in an episode
    - Complete a level without killing any enemies
    - Have all powerups active at once
    - Complete all missions within an episode under par time
    - Make certain enemies infight!

  • Legacy of Rust mission pack (15 is ridiculously tough and the last few levels just feel plain unfair. The last level in particular (E2M7 - Brink) Feels like a wannabe slaughter map during some parts.

Summary:
An visual upgrade from Chess Ultra that looks gorgeous and features polished animations, unfortunately, those are really the only 2 things it seems to improve on.
I would recommend this game to people who enjoy Chess but want to play it while also straining their GPU.
In terms of raw features it possesses slightly more than Chess Ultra, however the player count is much lower and the crashes make it a generally bad choice by comparison.
I like this game and I seriously wanted it to do well, but it sorely just needs... more!
Pro’s:
  • The game currently features 12 levels of AI opponents, the last 4 are incredibly tough!
  • Great variety of Chess puzzles to train players in different areas of chess strategy. (Creating Forks, Skewers, Mating via Pawn Promotion and some really sneaky pins)
  • Clean UI with easy to navigate menus.
  • Unlockable Chess Sets, Phrases and some (Distracting) Cosmetic Adornments.
  • Cross-platform MP
Con’s:
  • The AI Art avatars are horrendous and not only bastardize history, but also diminish the quality of the game itself.
  • Charging money for a "Mate in 2" and a "Mate in 3" puzzle is a really greedy move that I heavily despise. This should have been part of the base game!
Charge money for ugly cosmetic Chess piece skins instead. Chess Ultra has Mate in 1 all the way to Mate in 7 Puzzles, all for FREE!!!
  • The Phrases system is not a well thought out idea and will never be as good as letting players simply just TYPE TO EACH OTHER. Why not just implement text chat??
  • You have to be online, even in Single player. HUH?
  • If you are in a game with somebody online and their game crashes (or they alt-f4), your game just hangs there and your cant do anything about it. Why doesn't the game make auto-forfeit?? I have had several people ragequit and I was the one that had to take the loss. This is completely unfair and makes online play unsatisfying, assuming you can find a player.

If you want to charge money for a chess game, you first need to offer significantly more than what a free option such as the (very popular) Chess.com is offering.
I feel as though this game does not live up to that requirement.

My Brutal, but Honest Doom the Dark Ages Critique
This review is most likely going to piss off the following "people":
- "New Age" Doom fans who would never touch the classic games because it looks "too old and dated"
- People that hate Doom 3 for no justifiable reason.
- People that still pre-order games... In 2025
- People that play games on easy difficulty on purpose.
- Games journalists (Same as above).
- People that are obsessed with Souls-like games and want those same mechanics in every damn genre. Also Ultrakill players that adore the ridiculous "gun-parry" mechanic.
- Literally anyone who has NOT played an fps that is older than 2010.
- People who desire every new game in a franchise to be fundamentally different for no good reason.
- People that push for drastic enemy redesigns of classic, timeless enemies.
- IGN/ Polygon Viewers
- Lastly, anyone who does NOT read/watch trusted reviews before purchasing a new AAA game.
As a diehard DOOM fan since 2012, this game made me feel like a father whos son has just come out as transgender. I had some great times with him when he was younger, but now he is going down a path I will NOT follow.
Well, here goes my list!

- Denuvo Malware. GET THIS ♥♥♥♥ OUT OF GAMING FOREVER.

- Parry mechanics, your favourite button in this game will be Right Click!
Right Click to block, right click to parry, right click and then left click to shield charge.
This game punishes you severely for not using the shield and the melee system regularly. Wanted to play a doom game that puts the guns front and center? Sorry, look elsewhere!
Hot take: Parrying should be nowhere NEAR the fps genre. The whole point of an fps is to use ranged weapons, aka guns. Why would I need to parry if I am shooting from range? It just doesn't make any sense.

- The Gimmick Levels (Dragon and Mech) are bland and awful and feel like a cheap power fantasy that isn't earned, just given freely every so often to change up the pacing. Not to mention they do absolutely NOTHING unique and fresh in terms of gameplay mechanics that other games haven't already done.

- Difficulty sliders for game journalists, you can literally play the game with sliders basically giving you god mode and be REWARDED for it. (Achievements and ingame skins)Where is the balancing? where is the handcrafted experience? Why is it bland and overly adjustable? Do "people" actually find it satisfying to bypass challenges and game mechanics by just making it super easy??

- NO Multiplayer, NO Coop, NO Map editor mode, NO 3D Model Viewer, NO Leaderboards, NO additional challenge mode after you have finished the game and NO Boss Fight selection section. (Not that I would want to repeat any of them!)

- There is little to no defense for enemies behind you, especially ones that SPAWN behind you by design. Honestly, f*ck whoever thought this was a good challenge.

- Music is generic with very few noticeable riffs like from Eternal. You will be forever missed Mick Gordon.

- The plot is just awful, it has gotten to the point where it is so incredibly convoluted with all these different factions and magical items and figures. Its honestly absurd, Its also very predictable and full of cliches. While Doom doesn't even NEED a story, at least 2016's plot was COHERENT. Speaking of story...

- Far too many cutscenes! I don't give a SH*T about the lore, story, motivations or subplots. Thankfully all of these are skippable. Don't forget that Doomguy/Doomslayer's story started with his F*CKING PET RABBIT being killed by Demons. It started in a ridiculous fashion, so the more that they try to make it deep and complex, the more utterly absurd it becomes. This is like giving MARIO a convoluted space opera with nuance, sub plots and exposition dumps. Gameplay > Any possible attempt at a plot.

- The achievement list is short, generic and offers NO unique challenges at all (such as: Beat the game on Nightmare or UN, complete the game without certain upgrades etc.), just like Eternal's achievement list.

- Forced Ray tracing. Who the f*ck thought that this was a good idea?? I dont give two sh*ts about Ray tracing in ANY game, let alone a new one.

- Some of the enemy designs are awful and look more like quake than doom. The worst designs for me were:
Pinky and its rider - This looks less like a pinky (Which should look like a pink Rhino-Pig combination)and more like a wingless purple dragon. Why change the classic design?
Imps with Hair - Really? This looks like a demon monkey more than anything else.
"Cosmic" Baron - Can someone please explain to me how this is ANYTHING like a baron? It looks different, sounds different and even has different attacks. They should have just renamed it.
"Cosmic" Cacodemon - These enemies look far more like the "Octobrain" from Duke Nukem 3D or perhaps a Reimagined Quake 1 enemy than ANYTHING I would have expected to see in a doom game. What happened to staying close to the original designs?? 2016 and Eternal had near-perfect looking cacodemons that were loyal to the original sprite! Again, why change it, you got it right the first time!

- Hitscan enemies! Everyone's (least)favourite unfair feature is back from Doom 1 and 2!
Did literally anyone ask for this bs?

- Bullet-hell style boss-battles that feel ripped out of a completely different genre. Why even bother adding bullet hell sections when you cant even dash or strafe? You literally cant even reach some of the green projectiles in time to parry them, which results in an unsatisfying penalty in the form of damage or a missed parry/ projectile reflection.

Here are 2 very Mediocre Quarantine Zones that take about 5-10 Minutes each to complete and unfortunately provide no unique Loot.

Cargo / Holy Year Tunnel
Loot:
2 GRE Chests
Very Hard Lockpick Valuables Chest
Goal:
Close 2 manhole via dropped containers and kill all zombies

Cuisine / Three Moons Restaurant
Loot:
3 GRE Chests
1 Hard Valuables Chest
Goal:
Obtain 5 Relief packages scattered through the restaurant

As far as farming GRE Relief packages for XP goes, Stuffed turtle is still far more efficient!
I recommend playing each of the two Quarantine zones just once.

Low effort Nostalgia bait
(Just like the 5th Anniversary bundle)

- Are the weapons viable?
The DB Shotgun is nice and looks very elegant, but due to the fact of it being a DB, will never be as good as an orange or even purple tier Semi-Auto shotgun!

- Do they add anything unique to the game? (Eg. new mechanics or buffs)
Nope! Just a renewed sense of nostalgia. But nothing that affects gameplay in a unique way.

- What do I think of the outfit?
Meh, we have enough fancy looking suits in the game. The gold tie is a nice touch though.

Overall rating: 4/10
A brief and always welcome dosage of nostalgia for loyal fans such as myself. However, it is important to note that the weapons do NOT add anything new into the game nor do they "break" the damage caps of their respective weapon classes. If you are a big fan of the game and its 10 year (wow!) journey, give this FREE bundle a try. However I simply cannot recommend this merely on its merit and (lack of) features. There are several (Albeit paid) bundles that are far more viable for usage ingame.
Check out my other DL-DLC reviews for more brutal bundle reviews from a DL1 Vet!
