I was approached by friends in early august to play this game together, so I thought I should give it a shot. As I’ve never played any of the predecessors, I went in relatively blind. I had the impression, that this could be a fun little game where we could just fool around a bit in multiplayer & do some quests occasionally. Oh boy, how wrong I was. This game is so much more.
Though I knew & played the normal pen & paper DnD before, the round-based playstyle for the fights was a new experience to me in a videogame, but you’ll get acquainted quickly and there are so many possibilities for handling and defeating your enemies. The satisfying feeling while seeing an opponent – who taunted you earlier – step in front of a cliff will never get old.
While it’s not an open world I still got the feeling of having no or just very few restrictions and being able to go wherever I wanted. For the little loot-goblin that I am this was a blessing and a curse at the same time, as I had to open every crate and look into every vase I came across... But sometimes there was a little treasure to be found between the rotten tomatoes and dirty clothes. Sometimes. Or bones. So many bones.
A thing I learned early is that, while it’s pretty funny to just do what you feel like every now and then, in the end your choices can be quite important. There are so many possible outcomes for situations and scenarios, depending on past choices, the companions currently traveling with you, your characters race/class – I’m on my 5th playthrough and I’m still discovering so much stuff I missed before. But go on, press that shiny button, and see what it does. What’s the worst that could happen.
The companions are absolutely lovely. Sure, everyone has preferences, that’s fair. But still, I got the impression they are all interesting in their own way and given the opportunity to further explore their arc, they are given so much more character development and gain depth, and you can be an active part in the outcome. But not just your travel buddies; the whole world seems so fleshed out and colorful and rich. I got attached to the weirdest and most random NPCs because their stories just captured me. And the voice acting is incredible, god d*mn.
There is so much love and detail in this game that I can surely say that everyone working on this project deserves all the credit and praise they are getting, maybe even more! I’m hopeful we will get more of this kind of adventure in the future, but for now I’m set on playing and playing until I discovered everything this world has to offer.
