I have seen my friends play it, so I probably just need to give it another shot, eventually.
Normally I wouldn’t have judged the game based around its intention not meeting my expectations, however like you said, Capcom did say they would address the PvE complaints they received. The way they handled it though, doesn’t work, since the mode called PvE still isn’t PvE.
I think one of Exoprimals weaknesses is within the wording. If PvE wasn’t called as such, I wouldn’t have much of a problem with the game. Maybe if it was called “Indirect Combat” mode or something maybe it would be better, but it’s called PvE, so I’ll judge it for what they’re calling it.
