If you didn't "get" the Monster Hunter franchise until you tried World, this game seems like the equivalent for not just Street Fighter, but fighting games as a genre.

Street Fighter 6 has maybe the most robust suite of engaging and useful systems for neophytes I've yet to encounter in a fighting game.

For all the games that have claimed to be designed to teach you fighting games, this is the only one I've played that actually managed to click for me.

Basically everything is ergonomically designed to make your slow journey of education and self improvement as comfortable and fun as possible. I'm still bad, but even after months of being bad, I'm still excited about getting better bit by bit.

The character creator is pretty fun, too.

THE colony simulation game. THE emergent narrative game. You will remember the wonderful stories that unfold more than the pain of watching your fortress fall (you'll remember that, too, though).

The music is wonderful and perfectly matches how I ~feel~ playing Dwarf Fortress. The tavern song is incredible.

It's like playing the Silmarillion, except with more elves getting squished by drawbridges.

Left 4 Dead + Helldivers (or goofy Starship Troopers, if you prefer)

It's a 4-player co-op class-based horde shooter with procedurally generated caverns full of bug hordes to blast/burn/freeze/liquify.

As an added bonus, there's pretty fantastic mod integration that allows for user-experience enhancing client-side mods to be applied (change the UI, add meme sound effects, improve visibility of rare minerals, and generally fine tune your experience).

There are a bunch of mission types that keep things fresh, varying how you move through the caverns and prioritize your time and ammo. Some missions are as simple as finding and mining some precious doodads, others involve building and/or defending infrastructure in the caverns, others involve seeking out and defeating bosses.

The five difficulties (called "hazards") are meaningfully different, with 1-2 being almost relaxing, 3 requiring your full attention and basic competency, 4 being kind of annoying, and 5 being for cRaCkEd gAmErS. (I'd recommend playing hazard 3 most of the time.)

Unlocking your basic weapons and perks takes a little too long (20-30 hours for all four classes combined), but once you get going, you're having a literal and figurative blast fine tuning your methodology and perk customization down to a science.

Multiplayer isn't quite Monster-Hunter-grade *chef's kiss* balletic team play, but it still feels fantastic when everyone is in the groove blasting bugs, mining goodies, and generally helping each other out.

The developers put out meaningful updates every few months that add new gameplay features (and cosmetics) to keep things interesting and fresh. Very generous considering you can often get the game for $15.

In recent months they've been doing time-limited FREE season passes with cute little themes and new gameplay gimmicks. The gimmicks are interesting and all the cosmetic rewards get added to the random goodie bag loot pool so playing during the season only really helps you snipe specific cosmetics sooner rather than later, as opposed to making you feel bad for not playing enough. It's a nicely designed version of the season pass concept that feels like it exists mostly to reward and entice long-time players rather than forcibly addict newbies.

It's a shallow, mildly grotesque rhythm game that obfuscates the rhythm in order to punish you for even trying. Success is mostly determined by luck but still influenced enough by skill to trick you into thinking it's actually some sort of game. In lieu of depth or wit there are smears of mostly-randomized text built upon a foundation of uninspired non sequitur and cultural reference.

If you buy it you'll only embarrass yourself and others and showcase the myriad failings of free will and capitalism.

A 100% accurate representation of sex.

(Originally played to completion on console.)

This game is solid. I wrote an essay once about my interpretation of this game's writing and structure. Suffice to say, I thought it had more depth and sincerity than most people would expect from something called "Max Payne 3."

But the real treasure here is the soundtrack. Max Payne 3's score is just about as perfect a fit for the experience as anyone could hope for. Health's compositions create a throbbing, dissonant warmth that effortlessly drags you down into the tired mind of an old leviathan trudging through a life he doesn't want to live. It's heavy and it's hard and you hope the silence never comes. If Drive and Hotline Miami didn't sound like stylish self-parodies, they would probably sound something like the Max Payne 3 OST.

I've bought this game at least 3 times at this point. I've 100%-ed it at least twice. This is the most charming and inviting thing Rockstar has ever made. It's just got a very warm, cozy vibe. It's nice to just go to class, skate around the town looking for collecibles, or mow a lawn or two. Maybe headbutt a jerk while you're at it.

It's like if you took the adventurous comeraderie of early Harry Potter, combined it with the mostly-lighthearted retribution of the first Revenge of the Nerds film, and plopped that into a solid late-PS2-era GTA engine.

Worked fine for me on Windows 7.

A genuinely interesting idea that I don't want spoil. Fairly bland in execution and artistry, but nontheless worth seeing through to the end (it should only take a few minutes).
