if you're a fan of D&D5e, and you're a fan of choice-driven RPGs in general with lots of playability, and you don't mind the grind of long, tactical, turn-based battles where everything is a bad dice roll from going sour, than BG3 is the game for you.

Impressive for an indie developer, but other games (Wartale comes to mind) do what it wants to do with more effective UI and better immersion.

It's not for everyone, but if you want to be immersed in emergent storytelling, live in a world that is well fleshed out and well established, and go between whipping your prisoners to giving you more repair materials and trying desperately to keep your pet Boar alive so you can kill it later for its meat on the heels of sprinting away from the guard for having stolen a recipe for roast chicken, then Wartales is for you.

It's very much a game in the vein of Kenshi, where the story is mostly up to you. There are quests that all lend themselves to the atmosphere more than a plot, and there are very limited roleplay moments - this isn't a Fallout or a Skyrim where your character shines through quest choice or dialogue. Instead, Wartales tells its story through gameplay choices that emerge naturally. A soldier gets wounded? They may become a drunkard. Unable to pay your companions? They leave. Are you a large troop? A small and efficient one? Do you focus more on trading between townships or fighting off what the dark world has to offer?

Wartales is great - genuinely great. But it's a specific type of gameplay experience.

With a surprising depth of tactical ability and some lowkey dating sim elements, there's nothing more special than revving up XCOM2 and creating your friends as soldiers and blasting through aliens.

The community support for the game is absolutely outstanding, as well. The amount of customizability XCOM offers is amazing. Fully reccomend.
