I write this review as a new player, without any nostalgia for the game.

-Someone at Valve accidentally switched the "man vs. machines" and "casual" modes.
This game is infested with spinning snipers that will kill you the second you get in their sight.
The bots even advertise in chat, "Buy bot protection from the bots in your games here [LINK]"???
Other times they just try to kick you out of the game.

-"Deepest game mechanics and many alternative playstyles" behind a paywall or grind
Before playing, I've always heard that TF2 has a great depth to its game mechanics. The loudout you choose can alter the way you play to better fit your preferred playstyle, which sounds really fantastic on paper. The problem? You get 1 item drop per hour (up to 10 per week). Hence, if there are about 160, collecting the whole loudout will take you around 16 weeks, assuming you don't get duplicates. However, duplicates are going to drop, so good luck grinding for half a year at Minium... or just pay!!! I really wouldn't be against that whole system if you got rid of the RNG and the possibility to buy gameplay-altering items, which basically makes the whole system P2W. 

-Miscellaneous
Random critical hits and bullet spreads, anyone? Some classes lack viable alternative playstyles (spy, heavy, and sniper). No real updates in 6 years. I get 2 intelligences (objectives on the map), then the game flips me to the other team, and thus I lose. Competitive mode is a dead button. Lack of any eye candy. Character animations are fantastic, but animations for weapons are outdated.

The game has aged not the worst but still badly. The community is trying to lift this game as much as they can with all of their love for it, but they simply can't do all the work for the developers. If a refreshed version of the game will be created, I will certainly give it a shot.
