If you play with mods i'd recommend having a back up copy of all your mods installed via steam. Why? If a mod gets removed on steam, you ll be unable to load maps where the removed mods were used in.
Load the mods in as you need them. Example: Having a mod for trains that can be used in the year 2000, won't help you in 1900 but they will increase loading times and RAM usage.
FPS in the later stages of the game improved significantly after the last performance patch and maps that were unplayable, are playable again. I still recommend having more RAM than the 8GB, espacially if you play with mods.
A new patch was recently announce and the devs are still improving the game as we speak. Rumors say that Transport Fever II is in the making but it isn't confirmed yet.
After nearly 1300 hrs playtime the game still did not get boring and it is still exciting starting new maps.
I'll update the review as new patches are released, so everyone has an review of the current state of the game.
Would like to say that 8GB should be absolutely fine, mostly depending on additional VRAM and mod usage.
I have 4GB VRAM and 8GB System RAM and the vanilla game usually uses less than 5 GB System RAM. I also have not seen much increase in RAM usage on longer sessions, unless you add more vehilce types or assets etc.
As said, the amount used can increase f.ex. when using many mods, but you should still be fine. Even if RAM usage goes slightly beyond what is available, it should not have much of a negative impact if you have a decently fast swapfile.
In most cases, performance is much more likely to be limited by the CPU, mostly related to number of agents (town-sizes). A performance patch has been announced.
