In the 1910s, at the start of World War I, my great-grandfather was called to the Hejaz-Yemen front. Leaving his beloved behind in the village, he set out to defend the holy lands. Soon after, he learned his girlfriend was pregnant. He wrote a letter asking her to name the child "Medina" if it was a girl, or "Hira" if it was a boy. Months later, their daughter Medina was born. But no letter or news came from him. I couldn't find his name on the Turkish Armed Forces martyrs list or in Red Cross prison archives. Despite extensive searching, his fate remains unknown. Only God knows what happened to him. Perhaps he was a soldier under Desert Tiger Fahrettin Pasha. What pain he must have endured at such a young age.
