Early Access Review
This is a very inventive game, along the lines of Mount and Blade but done with modern war.
With tanks.
And artillery.
And air support.
NICE!

But seriously now, I have a lot of fun playing around with this game, but there's an issue that needs to be addressed. The user interface is terrible. For starters the menus are simple but unpolished with poor contrast. Spelling errors persist. Keybindings and settings are modifiable, but custom keybindings don't show up in the in game display.
The squad configuration screen needs to be heavily simplified, every single weapon and vehicle is in the list (instead of only the weapons you have researched) or just choosing a general category like 'bolt action rifle'. The controls themselves are not intuitive. "Save Preset" doesn't actually apply the existing preset to the squad, for example. "Copy to Squad" just changes each squad member to match what's displayed, and cannot be used as a copy/paste.
Speaking of squad customization, it's very nice the devs included it (I'm not decrying the feature itself) but it really needs better implementation. It only applies to squads you recruit, and does not apply to existing squads you "re-equip". Which means you can spend a good half hour building up a custom squad template, and have zero ability to apply it to your existing troops.
Also the 're-equip squad' button needs to have it's functionality reworked. What it does is give the current formation all of the best weapons available, which means you inevitably end up with one very well equipped force at the expense of everyone else. There is no ability to set, then apply, a standard of equipment.

That being said, I really do enjoy this game. The basic gameplay is fun, you can run around in first person mode, or play in a third person strategy mode. I typically play in third person unless some troublesome enemy vehicle needs a well-placed RPG, or a building needs some room-to-room attention.
The strategy mode is simple but effective, you order around each of your squads, can give simple commands, and watch the action play out in real time. The granularity of the difficulty settings allows you to craft the experience you want to play, so it's easy to find some settings that result in the gameplay experience you want.

Overall, I think the devs have made something potentially great here. A hidden gem if you will.
