This is, without a doubt, the best Mortal Kombat game ever released.
Now, you could say that's not a high bar, as in the past, Mortal Kombat has always been more style than substance. But here's the thing; they haven't just made an excellent MK game, they've actually made a genuinely excellent fighting game. Mortal Kombat has always been a game that offered appeal to casual fighting game players, while not really having enough meat on it for the more "hardcore" audience. At last, MK has more appeal for the veteran fighting game player, while still remaining accessible to newer players.

Also, don't try and play this with a keyboard. It's a fighting game, use a gamepad or an arcade stick (I have both but use a gamepad for MK)

I'm gonna run through the pros and cons at the bottom of the page, because now I'm going to address some of the more "controversial" aspects of the game.
Firstly, I see a lot of people putting day 1 DLC as a reason to downvote this game. Now I agree that Day 1 DLC is irritating, but honestly, it's not something that's going to go away any time soon. You've just gotta suck it up and deal with it.

Secondly, people are complaining about how easy fatalities are, and how you can use tokens for an "easy fatality". For the first aspect, I will agree that fatalities are easy. However I think that the difficult brutalities compensate for this extremely well. As for the quick fatalities; you don't have to use them. It doesn't help the player win. It literally just skips a few button presses for them at the end.

Lastly, DLC to unlock all of the items in the Krypt. This still doesn't affect you if you don't want to do it. Some people do not have time to unlock every thing in a game themselves. It still does not give them an advantage. Stop complaining about this everytime a game has this feature, chances are, the only people paying to unlock everything simply don't have the time to unlock everything themselves, and just want to play the game.

Pros:
- Genuinely seems to be fairly balanced.
- Good cast of classic characters (Kano, Sub-Zero, Scorpion, Johnny Cage etc.) while adding some of the best new character designs pretty much in MK history, or certainly since the dreaded PS2 era.
- Each character has three variants that change the special moves and some standard moves to varying degrees. Some are better than others, but it leaves room for experimentation.
- At the time of writing, a week or so after launch, it seems to have a healthy playerbase, I'm not struggling to find matches online
- BRUTALITIES ARE AN EXTREMELY SATISFYING ADDITION. Essentially, each character has a series of brutalities that require certain prerequisites to execute, resulting in a brutal death for your opponent. These range from the simple "final hit must be a throw, hold certain button etc) to fairly advanced (use a certain special move at the end of a 5 hit combo, for instance). The harder ones take a while to pull off, but ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥, when you finally get it done in a multiplayer match, it is extremely satisfying.
- Plenty of unlockables, such as costumes, fatalities, brutalities, and concept art (ugh).
- I actually enjoyed and completed the Story mode, which is not something I could say I'd actually done before with a fighting game (well, okay, MK9 and Injustice basically).
- FINALLY A POPULAR FIGHTING GAME ON PC THAT ISN'T STREET FIGHTER. Now we just need Tekken and Guilty Gear Xrd Sign and I can die happy.

Cons:
- At the moment, there seems to be a fair few issues with the netcode causing lag. I can't comment much on this, as my internet at University restricts a lot of multiplayer games, so I get lag the majority of the time. Still, I imagine these are problems they will iron out in future updates
- Fatalities can get repetitive, especially the more drawn out ones. This is only really an issue with online play, or if you're finding the final boss difficult.
- If you play online, 8/10 fights will be against a Scorpion or Sub-Zero player. the remaining 2/10 fights will be against Takeda in the Lasher variant.
- They still have a block button. Why. Why.

Overall, I'll give this game a solid 8.5/10
