Hell Dive

I should love this game.
🔸 Large open maps with objectives, bases, POI’ &, enemies sprinkled on it that allow for tactical approaches (more my style) or a more guns blazing approach.
🔹 The mechanics of passive, alerted and agro enemies (& how they spread) means tactics can be a mission saver.
🔸 The planet effects, Weather condition, Day/Night cycle.
🔹 Combat is not just taking HP off a target till it’s dead, armor is a big factor, and therefore what you use.
🔸 In mission adjustable Scope ranges, Ammo Type, Fire Rates, Semi/Full Auto for most of the weapons.
🔹 Weapons have weight, not only slowing you but reducing stability, accuracy & if heavier have sway when moving. You feel as if you're fighting the bigger support weapons raw power, as you would expect.
🔸 Injured Limbs are less useful, legs means you limp cant run, arms make weapons harder to handle and throwing shorter, chest wounds can see you bleed out.
🔹 In tough situations your helldiver voice becomes panicked, A small but very world building detail.
🔸 Lots of lovely attention to detail in environmental storytelling, weapon/turret/stratagem design/functions and many other areas that take it from just a game to an experience you live.
If you get the time on a deployments just look around and take it all in



However, the reasons I can't recommend this game is largely to do with the issues / bugs / inconsistencies and the fact that it takes so long and usually a few attempts to fix minor things, let alone the big ones.

Missed Opportunities
☐ Enemy bases are worth nothing (coin & XP). They have nothing to do with enemy Partolls (that literally pop into existence ~100m from you!) or enemy strength in that area, or the reinforcements.
If bases spawned the patrols for an area around them (or most of them) it would add a more tactical level of thought to a mission & reason to use time & risk reinforcement on what is at the moment nothing more than that Boom looked cool.

☐ The lacklustre progression.
It’s a grind to earn enough to buy base game gear, another grind to (unless using real money) to unlock new Warbonds and another to unlock whats in them, mostly due to ↓,

☐ The ridiculous low cap on Coin/Sample/Medel’s
EG, You can use 200 of the max 250 to buy 1 upgrade, whilst other are caped & being wasted.

☐ Co-Op is surprisingly limited.
Team reloads are questionable useless and having more team only really brings more types of weapons whilst increasing the enemy numbers.
Side note, Solo play is shafted by weak points on the rear of things that can out turn you and doors that need 2 to open (no other way to get in).


Existing Issues (Day 1 onwards)
☐ Excessive ragdolling.
Things that have been done to limit a few sources, but not to the out of map yeeting effet they and many other things can cause!

☐ Enemy corpses that you can't walk or shoot through, but your enemy can!
They can block an objective, or trap you under it, yeet you out of the map or sometimes kill you!

☐ Explosions clip through solid objects/terrain, unless it's yours vs the enemy.

☐ Solo/team wipe = spawn trapping by AI that forces you to drop into the same enemy that killed you!
Just let the host choose if the team wipe like on initial drop!

☐ Stratagems bouncing (randomly) of the same ground some stick too.
☐ Doing actions quickly can baulk your camera.
☐ Red (rough enemy locations) do not show on the orbital map if conflicting with the Extraction icon.
☐ Red (rough enemy locations) on similar coloured planets. I can't see that, = blind drop.


New Issue (post 1st patch)
☐ Patchnotes saying X,Y,Z have been tweaked/fixed have turned out to be utter BS
It’s not all, but enough, and big/noticeable ones at that. No testing then?

☐ Enemies (especially the Bots) walking up rock/cliff faces like its nothing.
EG: The foot of a Devastator that's walking towards you overlaps the large rock formation it's passing and suddenly it's 30m above where it was!
This extends to even Tanks!

☐ Mostly shield Devastators and Tanks that are now shooting whilst there gun/turret is clipping through their own body. Simultaneously not exposing weak points and/or making shoots that are impossible!

☐ Enemy LOS (like yours) is reduced in some weather conditions (eg, sandstorm) yet once agro they seem to return to original distances, putting accurate rounds on you way beyond there visibility distance!

New stuff seems to be added but not linked to everything in the same way existing was.
☐ New assets can be pinged but dont show on the map like existing ones do! (or did=Spore Spewer has been broken)
☐ New enemy occasionally ignore damage (Gunships shrugging off a Quasar!)
☐ New enemy are the best at causing many of the above/other glitches.


“Fixed” things that took too long
☐ Gun sight not being aligned to the gun! (day 1, ~6-7 months to fix all)
☐ Enemy keeping LOS on you through solid objects/walls (~6 months, still an issue)
☐ Enemy walking through solid objects/walls (~6 months, still an issue)
☐ Enemy shooting through solid objects/walls (~6 months, may be fixed!)
☐ Not having movement control for the drop pod, your supposed too (~6 months, mostly/sort of fixed fixed,)
☐ Others, and then some…

Times are from roughly when the community spotted them to patchnotes saying “fixed” and I say “fix” cos most are not.
I add these to give you an idea of how basic things were allowed to exist (most from day 1) and for so long. When something new comes along I dont expect a fast fix.


Helldivers is Fun but equally Frustrating
I often find myself quitting the game due to a bug ruining the fun and that's not a good place for a game to be in, it doesn't matter how good the rest of the game is.

If they can solve the issues (without causing new ones) this would be a gem. But I have my doubts.
