The more I play it the more I just want to play Red Orchestra.

This game has a real identity problem. It wants to be realistic like Squad, but also more accessible. It wants to have close quarter maps, but it also wants to have 100 player servers. As far as I can tell, this game is shooting to be Red Orchestra mixed with Squad, but it misses everything that makes those two games fun, namely balance, feedback and unique mechanics. Maps are structured like Red Orchestra/Rising Storm, with sectors that you capture in order to move your territory (with very similar limited verticality), but they are stretched to the scale of Squad maps. This results in death corridors held by mgs sitting 300 meters away, or snipers camping respawns from the same distance.

As for how the game actually feels to play, the weapon sounds and animations are a notable downgrade from every other game in this genre. Even the original Red Orchestra has weapons that are more satisfying to use. The game has some insane suppression effects that not only blur your screen but also completely throw your aim off like your character just ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ sneezed. So basically the game forces you to just prone up with a bipod and camp corners. I haven't had a single game where I enjoyed using the bolt action for anything. As far as I can tell there's no penetration either (at least I haven't been able to kill anyone through sheet metal with a mosin and when I asked in game my SL told me he doesn't there's penetration), so overall you're left with extremely lethargic gunfights against dumb ass MG nests.

As far as how the guns actually feel, nothing feels satisfying to shoot. I play a lot of games like this, and without a doubt, this game has the worst gun handling mechanics of any realistic-ish shooter on Steam. The way guns work is similar to Squad- you can shoot kind of in the center of your screen without aiming down sights, and once you do you have a lot more precision and you can zoom in slightly by holding your breath. In theory this means the guns should feel fine to shoot, but all the guns sound like PVC pipe potato guns. Every single rifle makes a THUNK sound, and all the other guns don't sound all that different from eachother and sound just as uninspired as the rifles. Overall the guns just don't feel all that fun to play with. There's no free aim gimmick like in Insurgency or Rising Storm, there's apparently no penetration, there's a distinct lack of visual feedback at range due to how the game handles AA.

Graphically, the game looks good at maxed out settings, but good luck getting it to run at a constant framerate like that. With a 2080ti, 32 gigs of ram, a 9900k at 5ghz, and the game installed on an SSD I sit around 80 fps maxed out with frequent dips into the 50s. After tweaking the settings down a few notches on a few settings, I've gotten a mostly stable 120, but the game now looks ugly as hell (let loose). Switching to all low settings makes performance a bit more constant, but at that point the game looks like PUBG with a WW2 skin. So overall I wouldn't call the performance bad, but I stand by the fact that the game looks ugly as ♥♥♥♥ unless you're maxed out.

So bottom line, is this game worth it? At $40 forget it. If I bought this game for full price I'd be pissed. There's so much more that I haven't mentioned in this review that completely kills my chub for this game that I didn't have the time to write about. The UI sucks, the spawn system is garbage, the spotting system is borderline useless, the map is difficult to use and there's no recon or any support abilities for the commander besides dropping supplies. These are all just surface level observations I've made in the 10 or so hours I've played. I'm probably still going to play this game and try to keep up with the updates, since this is basically the biggest ww2 realistic-ish game on Steam and it still has a lot of potential to be good. I really hope it improves its weapons, sounds, ui and optimization (add dlss pls) and will change the review if those things ever happen, but again as it stands I think this game is not all that fun to play.

Crysis with a new coat of paint, kind of. There are a number of features that are straight up missing that makes the first game more fun, biggest offenders being modding support and quicksaves. No leaning is not gone, it's just set to a really ♥♥♥♥♥♥ bind by default. Outside that, the game's art style has also changed to something a lot more vibrant (although that's pretty easy to fix). The game also seems to nerf strength mode and speed mode even in classic mode.

Only real improvements made to the game are optimization (though it doesn't feel like it once you set everything to very high), and the removal of SecuRom. Honestly I'd prefer if Crytek changed the Steam client of Crysis to the one they sell on GOG instead of spending all this time on an inferior port. Overall, I'd only recommend this game if you're a die hard Crysis fan that wants to see some extra eye candy. $15 isn't too bad of a price for this game, but I personally would not pay a penny more than that. If you don't have the first game, I highly recommend it still, just get it from GOG instead and play with mods.

Honestly I'm open to changing this review but only if strength and speed mode are reverted, gameplay changes like trees not breaking from punches are fixed, color settings and times of day are reverted to what they were in the first game, modding support is added, Warhead is included in the game, and further optimizations are made for multithreaded cpus. So yeah, just buy the GOG version and mod it.

Honestly it's an extremely good game, but personally I'm not feeling it enough to foam at the mouth like others have with the game. I get it, all the gameplay quirks and the flow of combat, but it just isn't for me. It's annoying for me to constantly be looking at my abilities and meters to know when I need to set a demon on fire or chainsaw them. I get it's supposed to be replacing pickups, but I just think it's a chore to always be looking out for it and I personally prefer the pickup system more. The whole platformer aspect is annoying too and makes sections without demons annoying as ♥♥♥♥ to play because when you're not ripping demons limb from limb you're jumping around like a monkey swinging on branches and ♥♥♥♥.

Music isn't as good as Doom 2016 imo, but that soundtrack was kind of hard to follow up. Plus Mick also acted like a big baby and didn't even finish the soundtrack, so it could have been so much worse Bethesda also decided to not pay Mick and ♥♥♥♥ with his music, but at least they hired Andrew Hulshult to write music for the DLCs, so I'm not too mad with the music in the end. Speaking of Doom 2016 and being better than this game, I prefer the tone of the story in the first game way more. Everything seems a little too serious in Eternal, which wouldn't be bad on its own, but compared to 2016 it just falls short.

That's all the personal issues I have with the game and they're all very subjective. Let's talk about what's better than 2016: weapon variety, level variety, enemy variety, more challenges, more perks. It's a whole ass smorgasbord of new content compared to Doom 2016. Performance is insanely good too, even with the new patch adding RT reflections. The game already ran smooth as butter on my gtx 1080 and 7700k (iirc around 180 fps on ultra/nightmare settings at 1080p), and now with my 9900k and 2080ti I get around 130 fps at 1440p on ultra nightmare, highest RT settings and DLSS set to quality. Even if you run this game without RT, it looks very impressive and runs extremely well on basically any hardware from the last 8 years.

So yeah that's it for the review. The game has issues for me, but I'll still try to finish it at least once. Besides all of the issues I have with the game are very subjective, and even with those subjective faults I still think this is a very well made game that is 100% worth the asking price. I just don't think this game is as good as some reviews make it out to be.

Best thing I can say about this game is that Remedy games are alive and well. If you're a fan of Max Payne and/or Alan Wake, this is the game for you.

Gameplay is wonderfully crafted with a decent amount of options to deal with enemies as well as navigating the changing environment. Destruction is absolutely phenomenal. Desks, thin concrete walls, cubicles, windows and like 90% of all items that aren't nailed down can be absolutely shredded with gunfire, melee, explosives and other thrown objects. The gun is satisfying enough, I guess. I was hoping for there to be some more high powered attachments like a magnum mod or something, but I haven't seen anything like that 14 hours into the game.

Story is pretty well told. I get very similar vibes to Portal 2 with all the different research labs focusing on something specific and having the gameplay be tied around that. Writing isn't anything groundbreaking, but it's interesting enough to have me hooked for 14 hours so far, so I'll call it good.

Audio on its own needs to be praised because the sound effects in this game are nothing short of amazing. Objects whistle through the air as you pick them up and chuck them at enemies or at walls. Everything in the game sounds so distinct and feels like it has mass to it. It's a very hard feeling to achieve, but Remedy have pulled it off. Music is pretty good, nothing I'd want to listen to outside playing the game, but it's still very good as far as video game soundtracks go. Like other Remedy games, Control also features a fictional band, which is very cool and distinct in the soundtrack.

Visuals are striking. Despite the game taking place in a concrete box, the fact that the building changes and moves as you progress the story gives it a very unique flare. Lighting is also extremely unique with lots of very saturated colors contrasting each other and the concrete environment. Combine that with RTX shadows lighting effects and the destruction and you have an incredible looking game that looks as good as it feels to play.

As for some of the cons of this game, performance isn't great outside of RTX cards. With DLSS on the highest res, and at 1440p maxed out, with RTX on, I get 80-ish fps, which is pretty good, but I'm on a 2080ti and a 9900k. I don't think this game will run too great on anything worse than a 1060, so keep that in mind. Animations in cut scenes are also not great in this game, which might break the immersion for some people considering how good everything else looks, but for me that's a nitpick. Ability customization and loadouts are kinda weak imo. There's no way to save loadouts and you have to rearrange all your upgrades individually one at a time whenever you want to change up your gameplay, which hurts how fun the game can be if it did a better job making the player think about what guns they are using to fight what enemy. Finally the random missions that happen at random sections of the building are annoying because they pop up in the middle of you doing story missions and they offer 0 good rewards.

Alright final thoughts. This game is absolutely great, the gameplay is dope, the story is good, the audio is insane, the graphics are very unique and look extremely good. At $40 bucks, this is a great game as long as you can look past the hiccups, but to me all those are more or less just nitpicks and 99% of the game has been extremely fun for me. The game is currently free on Epic, and as a devout Epic hater I'm gonna say that it's 100% worth it to install that gross ass program on your computer to get this game for free.

Honestly I don't know where all these bugs people keep talking about are. The biggest issue I have with the game is how my nitrous stays on if I try to use my controller while the steam overlay is open, and even then, tapping shift on the keyboard a few times fixes the game completely. Handling also seems to be a point of contention for this game, but if you're looking for realism you won't find it here. You can tune your car to be focused more on drifting or on handling and for an arcade racer it's not anything deal breaking. The acting is whatever, it's very reminiscent of older NFS games like Underground, which is to say it's not great, but it doesn't ruin the game for me.

With that out of the way, I have to say that I love the visuals in the game. The dark aesthetic with rain and neon looks stunning even 6 years after release. Performance on my system maxed out at 1440p (though granted I have an i9 and 2080ti) is basically flawless, I usually sit around 150 fps and I've never seen it drop below 110. AI isn't the smartest for sure, but races are still plenty of fun. There's nothing new here that you haven't seen in previous NFS games; drift events, time trials, point races, drag events and touge events make up most of the content and I think it's all pretty well made and decently fun to play, even if the AI isn't perfect. Currently the game can be had for 7 bucks and I think that's a no brainer if you're looking for an arcade racer that you can pick up for 30 minutes at a time.

Well slap my ass and call me Sally, it's $5 right now. This is honestly a steal, however, there are some big caveats here. Not with the game itself, you already know what's up, I'm throwing North Koreans into shark infested waters with strength mode. All that good ♥♥♥♥ you don't get in 2 or 3. So the caveat, GOG has the 64 bit executable and it is way more compatible with modern hardware and apparently runs a ton better. There is also the remastered, but that's on Epic and ♥♥♥♥ that ♥♥♥♥, I'm waiting for it to come to Steam. This game is amazing and people have already explained it better than I ever could. So just buy the game if you're a hardcore epic gamer, just know that the Steam version is a lil scuffed.
