Portal 2 is the puzzle game of the past decade. The game's age is not a hindrance to its entertainment value. Brilliant, humurous writing, a cast of lovable characters whose developments would suck you right in, and of course, progressively more challenging and mind-stretching puzzles fun for a good couple hours. Its a pure puzzle game, filled with engaging dialogue and interactions that rival comedy's best.

Very easy transition from an avid Slay the Spire player to this one, Monster Train scratches the exact itch that StS players would enjoy. Totally would recommend.

OVERALL: Good JRPG. Expect 50-50 combat/reading. But by 50-50, I mean 500-500 cause there'll be a lot of it. 7/10.

This game has been in my backlog for some time, and quarantine gave me a reason to complete it. I have mixed opinions on the game, will start with the cons.

(-)
o This WILL take up a huge portion of your time, so be prepared for some commitment if you are the type to see a story to its completion. The hours and game play of other reviewers don't lie. I didn't do quite a lot of side quests but I still managed to clock in almost 40 hours of gameplay. I played this in few bursts over a span of a month from mid April and just finished a month later. Be prepared before coming in on this game.

o The two main protagonists rely on a bit too many incest innuendos for comfort. Granted, they're step siblings, but I think this direction generally could've been forgone for a more quality, familial relationship. I think the attempted fanservice-y "romance" is a bit too forced and honestly takes away a great opportunity of writing a more wholesome route.

o Fetch quests are present in side quests. Lots of idle time just moving around the map. Granted, this seems to be a staple among RPGs, and backtracking is mostly done in side-quests rather than main storyline. But having to move two minutes one way without any other stimulation to an area just to grab an ingredient or exterminate a monster is a drag rather than something worthwhile.

o More minor compared to the rest, but one thing that irked me is that I failed a couple of side missions because I ran out of time to accomplish them in game due to main story-progressing, but the game does not even state a time limit so I never really would have known. Just kinda sucks since I may have wanted to do a side quest for some gold but once I check if it's available, I just see a slew of "Failed Missions".

PROS

o Combat and leveling up system is scaled quite nicely. If you lose a battle, the game notices this and makes the monsters easier to fight. Can be good or bad depending on how much you want a challenge, but I generally regard that as a good thing since I play more for the story than anything else. The level system also is formulated in a way that doesn't make you too overleveled or underleveled with how it scales XP based on your current level and the area in the game you are in.

o World is massive and always changing. Funny thing is this game has less cities than a mainline Pokemon game, but each area has their own distinct feature and part in the story that I can't help but enjoy the different atmospheres between them. Dialogue per character changes as you progress the story, which is really fun detail but not necessary to go out of your way to check the shifting dialogue.

o Music is good. It repeats at times but I'd complain if it were some bad selection of tunes. Thankfully, they are pretty good. My favorite is the peaceful town one and the epic boss battle one.

o Story! Man, this is the main reason why I pushed through with the game. The story within this game (i.g. not counting future sequels) was pretty engaging all through-out and you feel like you really contribute to the events that unfold. The story is also the main reason why I'm considering getting the sequel, because ♥♥♥♥ just drops at the last chapter.

o Characters. Diverse, lovely set. I love all of them and their dynamics. They all provide flavor as you progress through the story, and each of them also are fleshed out pretty well.

Spec Ops the Line brings you in the mind of a soldier in a slow but steady psychological breakdown. It follows the protagonist's mission and also slowly unveils his deteriorating state of mind, one that was initially a military-driven rescue operation which eventually spiraled to a more rogue-like act of vengeance that was catalyzed by the harsh truths that they discovered through their mission and even by the actions that he felt stifled by.

Anyone can finish this game in about six hours or less in medium difficulty. The game really fleshes all these hours though so I much prefer it this way as opposed to fruitless fetch-quest sort of deals that break the immersion. The game boasts a good selection of guns and a well-designed, interactive environment, and the difficulty level scales quite nicely given the number of missions condensed in the game. But what sets this game apart from other contemporary FPS games lies in its story-telling and the choices that you have to make which challenges your own morality on difficult situations. Many times there will come painful decisions that you will have to make during chapters, and the game makes you feel the brunt of that decision to the point you'll feel like ♥♥♥♥ after. The characterization is spot on as the soldiers also become less and less level-headed as they come across these grueling situations. Moreover, the loading screens and intel that you spot along the way advance the worldbuilding and speak to you as the player rather than the protagonist - really pushing you to examine the morality of your actions in the game.

There are also many other elements present in the game that separate it from other shooters, appearing in the later chapters of the game. Without delving too deep into spoiler territory, both the mind and the combat will act as a unitary force which is unique and well-designed. This separates it from the hordes of shooter-focused FPS games by introducing a more psychological twist to it, imagined at a frightening level of engagement. If you're a fan of morality-challenging, choices-matter style of gameplay, this one would be the right fit for you. The shooter aspect is done pretty well too and is manageable enough to navigate to have a good challenge.

9/10!
