As it stands, Shadows of Doubt is.. a neat creation, a neat starting point, but ultimately lacks depth or intrigue.

Every case is just going to be what you see on the surface. Someone felt they weren't getting paid enough, murdered their boss. The fliers in their house mention a radical group, but that radical group is just a tickbox on their character sheet, it's not real. No one is getting framed for anything or blackmailed. If someone tries to knife you on the street you can't report them for a crime, and if you try to arrest a criminal on the street: you just messed with one of the people of New York City so everyone wants a piece of you. At least until you're out of sight, then all your international war crimes are forgiven.

Information will often be coincidental. You can get asked for some cases simply to find 'brown haired, brown eyed' as a suspect - which occasionally will magically fill itself in with someone's name when you come across them. Casework becomes.. a repetitive slog. It's your dayjob.

I did enjoy some of my time with Shadows of Doubt, it has some good aesthetic and premise, but it feels like something that.. would be in the background of Deus Ex or GTA or something, rather than the solo feature. At least as it stands. Even just creating a good dozen cases and an overall narrative to go with would make a solid sell. Which kind of defeats the purpose of procedural generation, no?

Still, I do very much appreciate the effort put in, and that Shadows of Doubt exists in general. It is an avenue worth exploring even if it does not always bear fruit at the end.

A game about attempting to use WarioWare to normalise the mental state of the populace.

Akin to Papers Please, Mind Scanners is more about the strange situations and people, and overall story, than your actual job. It is nicely constructed, with some nice pixels to see even though the viewing window is on the small side. The mini-game does get a bit tiresome toward the end, and investigating the alternate endings or possibilities could be a bit of a struggle if one were so inclined.

Cute frens. So many lovely details in all the animations. Beautiful. I would only complain that I wish it were a little more than just netting x of each friend, a little improvement to gameplay/engagement even if the length remains about the same.

So I can't really say I recommend playing the game, but it is a jewel.

Hokko Life unfortunately feels very directionless. You have wonderful freedom in what you do with your time, and compared to Stardew Valley it doesn't feel like every second or minute is vitally important. However it also feels like you've finished most of the content within the first month/season and for the rest you have to make your own fun. Again with Team17 publishing it feels like they got an idea, smoothed it out, but never fleshed out and finished an actual game.

On the other hand, in regards to making your own fun.. Hokko Life gives the player wonderful freedom, with the first player-made content system I've personally seen since APB Reloaded. You can make and detail your own furniture and clothing. While the system isn't the most convenient to use, you and others can make fantastic items in game, share them, place them. It would be nice if it was a little easier to encounter other peoples items, and if the game's built in selection was wider and more readily available for those that don't want the extra hassle, but it is still great to see players being enabled to express their creativity in such a way.

Just remember to grow an orange tree in the first season or you'll be waiting a year for any farming related upgrades ever.

My main take away from INMOST is pain; but it is lovely that the story can evoke such response.

Overall INMOST is a fairly simple game. Puzzles and combat are rudimentary, and though some of the control bindings are weird it is usually more that the characters aren't capable of much that makes things awkward. The knight segments are even more out of place. Despite this the game manages to remain engaging enough to tell its tale. It doesn't feel like you're just watching a movie while having to keep the play button pressed.

The background art is wonderful throughout, while the foreground loses some of the beauty the visual distinction is important for gameplay clarity. Invisible collectables are very silly, and I can see the game being a bit of a struggle to play through again if achievements are your driving purpose.

Comparisons to Braid are valid, the two do feel quite similar, and though Braid is a much more solid game I still appreciated my time with INMOST.

When a game is made by gnomes and has plushies of a range of characters, there's a fair chance it's going to be a good time; and Everhood is just that. While personally I prefer the time spent dancing to the beats opposed to sending them back, it was still a fun experience overall.

The journey is not entirely smooth, not entirely happy, the music loops not always flawless, but there are always bumps in the road.

Demon Turf covers a whole lot of ground, with plenty of levels and a fair range of jumping puzzles, little cosmetics, and mini-games, yet none of it quite flows properly. Each level may be distinct in structure and theme, but they don't engage the player properly. The small efforts stack up to make the aspiration of defeating the Demon King too much of a hassle, particularly when needing to return to each level for a slight variation.

While I remember, the melding of Beebz' transformations with her hair and dress are lovely. There is also a small amount of Jet Set Radio vibe from some of the music, but there also isn't a lot of variety of music which is unfortunate.

The core idea of Dagon is a nice one. To take a given short story and simply give it visual form. To add some bits of context to the ideas both from Lovecraft's experiences and the time period enables more understanding of the work.

I might argue however that there should be.. more, perhaps. Not that one should scoff at what has been done, especially when free, but I ask for.. better. Improve on it, add to it. Consider smoother transitions, consider focusing more on details and the feel or atmosphere of what you're transcribing. Does the chasm feel like a void, is the moon in the right spot, is it lighting the rocks the right way as it reveals the depths? This blending of mediums should try to draw more from cinematography.

..I'm also not sure we needed an excerpt of Lovecraft's ad writing, and some of the other notes, it is certainly context that he did write other things, but maybe not the right place for it. The first (and currently only) extra story also being one from Lovecraft's childhood also somehow feels insulting. Amongst a greater library perhaps.

Blade of Darkness very much shows its age in almost every way, and is perhaps one of the most clunky games I have encountered, but it remains a fairly entertaining game with some neat ideas involved, particularly for its time.

Plenty of exploration to be done, though not all the loot will be of use to you depending on your chosen character. The control scheme for melee combos can take some getting used to but isn't too bad for the most part, and if it had been developed further could have been an interesting source of progression - learning the moves from a given weapon to use with others of its type. Sadly this is not the case. In fact you don't really even want to pick up a weapon that isn't your class speciality, it's just going to be weak and inconvenient.

Do remember to save often: that is unless you can be taunted by the game having a lower opinion of you for doing so.

Blackwind is nothing complicated, it achieves its simple goals fairly well: for the most part. There are aspects that lack fine tuning, some jank, but overall a solid project. Difficult to add specific detail but would play more.
