They had such a good vibe going with the first half of RE7. They really nailed the atmosphere and the writing was decent. It turned to slop in the back half and this game just decided to move forward with that. I don't mind that it's cheesy. I mind that it's messy. The writing is god awful and at times cringy to sit through. I know RE games aren't known for their amazing writing, but my god is this a step backwards.

I think one of the biggest problems is how unlikable the character of Ethan is. Any time he speaks I wince. (Not a knock on the actor, the writing is terrible.)

The other thing I find really terrible and annoying is how OLD and lazy this game feels. For instance, hey you're captured! You must find a way to break free of your restraints (which are just magic strings tied to nothing in the ceiling). Oh, you managed to break free, good news THEY LEFT YOU WITH ALL YOUR WEAPONS. They do this multiple times. Oh several "bosses" are weak to the cold? (Thankfully it's winter and they live in a castle surrounded by weak walls or fragile windows!)

I almost turned this off after I saw a villain with a giant floating hammer, but I decided to give a chance. At some point the big lady said "Don't waste my time." That's how I felt about this game.

Sorry if you like this, but it's not for me. This feels more like an amusement ride than a game. Sure you have ammo, most enemies are just bullet sponges that you can never kill. The level design seems focused on keeping you moving forward, even though there is some backtracking it almost feels like it was made with speed runners in mind. Sure Lady D will chase you, but she gets amnesia when you enter certain rooms. I know there is survival horror and action horror, but this feels like neither. At least in RE4 you could run out of ammo and some enemies really were a threat. This game feels like baby's first horror game.

4/10
